Re: Off-season changes?
Paint shop jail, is that kinda like chassis prison? I have a few buds with there rides locked up also. And yeah, she had a little blow by, but didn't really smoke like I thought it would of. Probably because there was NO compression in that hole. My winter upgrade might just be jumping ship on the whole bbc thing and going ls1 powered with a little boost, but I am still tossing ideas around right now, we shall see.
I am not really sure what the question is, but I am pretty sure the answer is Big Block.

Re: Off-season changes?
Yeah, real similar... Hopefully I can find my get out of Jail free card.
On the piston, I meant before it burnt - usually something like that starts out by oil getting past the rings

Re: Off-season changes?
john, plugs looked good before, but I changed the tune up for first round in georgia and it puffed smoke at the end of the run and took out a couple of plugs. I should of pulled the head right then, but I tried running it again when I got back home on my normal tune up, but the damage was already done and I just made it worse. It is my own fault, I was running q16 and it just doesn't have enough octane to support anything over 300-350hp worth of nitrous regardless of how safe the tuneup is. It was time for a freshen up anyways, I just wasn't planning on buying a new set of pistons.
I am not really sure what the question is, but I am pretty sure the answer is Big Block.

Re: Off-season changes?
Was that the first time you tried the Q16? I can see how it would need less total timing but I can see how it would be tough to take a shot at how much less, especially on a bigger tune up. Sorry to hear about the damage...
How did you come to the conclusion that is the limit on Q16? I've wondered about using it with Nitrous how much it would affect the tuneup.

The nitrous guy's around here that have tried Q16 all had issues and went back to C16 or better. I run the C16 in my 14.2-1 motor.

Re: Off-season changes?
I used to run c16, but switched to q16 earlier in the year once I was class limited to one plate/stage and I have just stayed with it. This was the first time I had tried both kits on it with the q16. I like the fuel, the car is much crisper on it and pick it up a little also, but even VP says to limit nitrous to @300 which is where I usually am at. When it hurt the piston it had almost double that in it. I have run the same jetting in the car before, but on c16 with less fuel pressure and more timing in it. I did double check the retard box with a timing light before I made the pass and it was working. I also checked all of the selenoids and fuel pressure before and since the pass, so it really doesn't leave a whole lot. I have heard of other racers having the same problem on the fuel also.
I am not really sure what the question is, but I am pretty sure the answer is Big Block.
Re: Off-season changes?
What your saying sounds like what we've been hearing around here. Two kits on and death happens. Sorry it happened to ya. At least you learned something from it although the hard way. I had a shop try to talk me into using Q16 but I had already heard about some issues on nitrous. I think they were trying to get rid of what they had left.

Re: Off-season changes?
My winter plans are possibly upgrading the cage to 25.5, rewire the nitrous system and hopefully add a data logger if I can afford it.
I'm also going thru the suspension on our '63 Chevy II convertible and my '95 Firehawk needs some tranny work (3-4 synchro and bearing for 5th and 6th).
At some point my son and I are putting a 5.3L truck engine in his '78 Nova. Would like to do that before summer too, but we'll see. He's only 14 so we've got time.
