#1 Post by apacheracing » Sun Jul 29, 2012 8:07 pm

Untill today. I am helping a buddy with a car, 71 El Camino, 481 Big Chevy engine, 12.8 compression, 325 Dart heads with mild port job, Comp Cams roller, 714 intake, 680 ex. 278. 282 at .50 110 lsa. 1050 dom carb. Powerglide, 488 gears. It will be right at 3200 pounds with me in it. I have an idea what it should run, but what do you think. I will be driving the car for him for a while, untill the 59 Apache is done. Image Gonna launch on the brake at 5500 rpm and shift around 6800. We are going to the track next friday night to give it a try. I will let ya know how it goes.

OK, I just got back from the track. We got 4 passes in. The first pass I launched at 5000 and shifted around 6000, went 10.82 and 121 I was out of the gas just pass the 1/8 mile mark but got back in it. On the second pass, 5300 on the brake and shifted at 6500, went 10.52 and 127, The tires spun about 12 to 15 feet, so I tried to get the tires hotter and let some air out of them. 3 pass launched at 5500 and shifted at 6800 it went 10.44 and 128. Best pass but I went 1 more time. This run felt sluggish and kind of sputtered down the track, 10.58 at 122. When we go back I think we can get to 10.20s with some tuning. But this is a start. Hope to post videos later .

I forgot to mention that the wing window blew out of the drivers door on the 3rd pass right at the finish line, 128 hiles an hour and was laying just a foot out of the groove and didnt break. I thought the track crew saw it, but no. By the time we told the track crew, they had run 8 pairs of cars, went out at picked irt up, and not a scratch on it. Put it right back in and ran again.

I know it's hot out, but you should really leave those closed when you're racing the car... Just think how much faster it would be without all that drag from the wing windows flapping out there in the wind?
