If you decide to go with a small block, guess what, you'll need new frame mounts.

LOL, yeah I don't know why they did what they did but I don't know what I am doing. IF a small block goes in the car it will only be in there temporarily till I can afford a big block.

Pretty sure its a 366 after looking for what was described.

I'm with John...check that bore and stroke. Plenty of racers use tall decks...you can run a longer rod that way.

So just pull heads?

Yeah you could pull one head and get cyl dia. I don't know what you have in the way of measuring tools, but you could turn it over and measure stroke as well.

Don't really have too many measuring tools but I wouldn't know how to do that anyway.

A tape measure would work for this. The 427 bore is a lot bigger than the 366. A rough measurement is all you need...

Like mytmouz said, take of the heads and measure with a tape measure or steel rule.

A 366 has a 3.935" bore or close to 3-15/16".

A 427 has a 4.250" bore or 4-1/4".

Both of these apply unless the motor has already been bored out.

How good are 500 caddy motors? I have a buddy who has one for sale for 400. its a 1976 caddy engine and auto trans.

You can pick up a digital micrometer for around 30 bucks at your local(ish) parts store. This is a valuable tool to have. You can measure the bore the obvious way...to measure the stroke use the long end of the micrometer. There's a little stick that will come out the back when you open it so you would use that. Bring a piston all the way up in the hole. Use the stick to get a measurement from the surface where the head mounted to a flat spot on the piston. right that measurement down. It will be around .010 or so. Next get the piston at the bottom of the cylinder and measure to the same spot of the piston from where the head mounted. Then subtract that first measurement and that should give you an idea of the stroke. Should be around 3.76 or 4.0.

The caddy motor would be hard to find parts for...or at least they would be a tad more expensive due to lack of demand for them.

With aftermarket heads rods pistons cam intake carb or whatever you can make 800 n/a with the caddy motor.They are heavy.There are tons of good deals block chebby goodies, dare to different

Ended up picking up a built 355 from one of my race buddys, so for now the camaro will live with a small block engine till I get a big block built.

OH, I also "Accidently" bought this 68 caddy as well. I picked it up for 600 bucks and its in really good shape. I am just going to flip this one and make some coin for the camaro.
