I'm thinking of doing to mods to my front subframe this winter. I'll likely have to do teh work myself to keep the budget in tact, so that means using my MIG. I'd like to use moly tubing to maximize the weight reduction. Can a MIG be used on moly tubing successfully? If so, any special gas or wire necessary?
Thanks.

Re: MIG welding chrome-moly tubing
I thought mig with chome moly was a no no .
Re: MIG welding chrome-moly tubing
There's a lot of info out there on the web about it, but I'd rather get some input from guys that I know more about.
I found info from shops that are MIGing tube frame off-road chassis. They make is sound like with the right wire, its no big deal.

Re: MIG welding chrome-moly tubing
I think with the right person welding, it can be done successfully. But it's not NHRA legal, so I wouldn't recommend it. Either do chromoly and tack it for someone else to TIG for you, or go with DOM mild steel to be able to Mig.
Re: MIG welding chrome-moly tubing
If your gonna go with chrome moly i would suggest using the tig method, however it can be mig welded using ER80S-D2 wire.
Re: MIG welding chrome-moly tubing
That's the wire I've been finding in other places too.
I think the NHRA rule is to direct chassis work toward experienced welders when it comes to faster cars.
Thanks for the info guys.

Re: MIG welding chrome-moly tubing
Mig Welding Chrome-moly can be done, the biggest thing you have to remember is DON'T USE CHROME-MOLY WIRE/ROD you must use mild steel wire/rod like ER70-S2 or 80 S-2 wire like Bad67 said. If you don't, you will have to do a very extensive heat treatment to make the weld joint flexable enough not to crack.
I have to add my comments to the fact that NHRA/IHRA don't allow mig on any chrome-moly. Must be tig welded.
My 2 Cents
