I've always used a spray can to paint my roll bar/ cage and tin work but recently, the Krylon paint I'm getting really sucks.

Right now I'm using Krylon 1613, semi flat black but they changed something and now it doesn't spray even and spits a lot and I can't get a smooth finish.

Has anyone else used a different brand with better success?

I have an air compressor and spray gun, but the wife doesn't like the smell and we all know where that will lead too....

Did you try to put the cans in the sun to warm the up???You also may need to shake the crap out of them..

Try a can of rustolem pro paint...It takes a bit to dry but nice stuff..Comes in a big can...Good luck

Yeah shook the crap out of it and it still spit and carried on.

I was going to try Rustoleum, next. I had a can of their semi flat black which I think has a harder finish then the Krylon, but always had good luck with Krylon.

Maybe that's why the cost of a can went down?

Adam aka Young Gun painted his with the brush on hammer tone paint and it turned out looking great. Seems to be pretty tough also.

Try VHT SP27 hood and bumper paint it looks really good or go to your local automotive paint store and get Dupont trim black also SEM trim black is good.

go to a automotive paint supplt store, they sell stuff in cans, i use alot of it for little stuff,sometimes its alot of work to break out the gun and reduce paint then spray clear, if its little parts I use the can. But you could paint the whole thing

My wife knew I was upset about the Krylon, so she went out on her own and bought me some
Rustoleum semi gloss black. One thing I did notice it, Krylon uses that nozzle that you can rotate
the fan pattern. Rustoleum use the old type of nozzle, which we all know works....

Don't know if this is of any help, but I found an automotive paint supply place here in Sacramento (Jerrys Paint & Supply) who will mix up any flavor paint for you and supply it in a spray can. The paint on my Camaro is actually an old 1988 Chrysler/Jeep color, Tennessee Blue, originally produced by Sherwin-Williams. I called S-W to ask about availability, etc., and was told that I was looking at something like $800 a gallon, with base and clear coat, etc.

All I needed at the time was something to do touchup and repair work. Anyway, I went to Jerrys Paint & Supply to see if they could match it and discovered that they were able to pull the paint mix proportions out of the old books, mixed it up for me on the spot and provided it in a rattle can. I was really happy, cuz it was exactly what I needed. It's obviously not something to use for major paint work, but for things like underbody and frame and minor touchups, it's a perfect solution.

I know you were'nt looking for body paint here, but thought I'd mention this so that others might benefit. There'll be a retail automotive paint supply place locally that'll be able to provide paint colors on demand, in rattle cans or in quart sizes. Not cheap, but then not having it is worse.

As John said I used hammer tone on my cage and I really like the way it turned out thanks to my girl of 8 1/2 years Tara. She painted it all pretty much and did it with a foam brush... It is very tricky to do this and make it turn out well. I did mine like this because it was something different that nobody had done around my parts....

Well here's an update. I used the rustoleum and it worked better and gave me the finish I wanted. Then have you ever thought, well I'll add one more coat to make it look good and then diaster hit's? Well it did for me. Something must have been in the bottom of the can that didn't mix right and it made the paint have a bubble appearance in a few areas.
I'm now thinking about getting a quart of semi-gloss and using my detail gun and spraying it.
I thought doing interior sheet-metal was bad, this is worse....
