Looking to either buy or build a heavy duty engine stand. The current home made three leg stand I have makes me too nervous with a fully assembled big block on it. And, I'm gonna be at that stage here soon once again so thought I'd do something about it.

I almost bought that one but couldn't stomach the price. This is the one I bought instead.

That's a nice looking one. Does it seem stable with a full dressed engine on it? Can you lock it in more than one position?

John - I bought the heavy duty folding engine stand from Harbor Freight - the precision is not the best but it seemed to hold up well with my fully built big block, even with the blower sitting on it.

I'v had my fully dressed tall deck Dart block motor on it and it didn't drop any. The last stand a had came from Harbor Freight for $39.99 with no comparison between the two. It's apples to oranges.

The block does seem to drop as it transfers weight from the hoist to the stand. But my Cast iron headed 396 BB sits level when it's completely on the stand which leads me to believe it was designed to do that.

It has never scared me, but it doesn't have that cool crank like the one from Jeg's

I would assume shipping weight would tell you a little bit about the stand as well.

While that gear head thing looks like a cool deal, I'm not sure it's something I want to pay $100 extra for. I went ahead and pulled the trigger on that one from Northern you got Chris, looks like it's a good one.

I'v had a couple dressed bb's on it and been every happy with it. Good buy!

Interesting that it will clear the flexplate, that's kinda handy but probably hard to get back there at the crank bolts.

Got the new engine stand in yesterday from Northern Tool. Seems like a decent stand for the money, not likely the pin they use in the head to keep it from rotating. Mine fit really sloppy.

I believe I'm going to redo that setup but other than that seems to be quite beefy and a lot more stable than my three legger.

Yeah, I don't like the pin in mine either. I figure it's just for safty. I like the 5th wheel though, it makes it easy to spin the stand around.

Broke out the new stand today finally. I had to make a few mods to it. I replaced that sloppy pin with a 1/2x4" long hitch pin and drilled the hole all the way through so it passes through both sides. That tightened it up a bunch, almost a bit too much. Also welded a nut to the top of it so I can snug it down tight if I want to.

Mine has 2 forward legs, 4 casters, but trying to get my hoist to get centered above the motor sucks.

X2 - I can see that will be an issue. I just barely got the bare block on there from the cherry picker. It will be tougher with the fully assembled engine on it. Have to try and figure out a way to do that.
