PAINT STRIPPING

Found a very quick way to strip the paint off my Harwood hood.Using a small torch heat a small area 2 or 3 " for only 1 or 2 seconds then just scape it off with a putty knife. I did the entire hood in about 15 min it had 2 paint jobs on it including multicolored flames on the front part.

I'll be darned... but I thought Harwood's were black gelcoat? it's a paint?

Your right John it is black gel cote. That is paint Im stripping its really dark purple the gray is primer it came off with a DA and 80 grit paper in 10 min. If anybody does this be carefull not to put the flame to close or leave it too long I got 1 soft spot but it seems to be ok after it cooled.

Most paint jobs that are applied over primer can be stripped away easily with a Razor Blade, I can usually peel a Whole car in about 4 hours

I tried the razor blade first but the car has 2 paint jobs over the original with primer inbetween all no stripping was done .All the razor did was dig in no peeling.

When using a razor blade 2 things are very important

#1 you have to hold the blade at very low angle and get a spot started down to the primer then only peal about a 1/2"-3/4" strip at a time. I

#2 the Made in USA (use only blades made in America) has to be up, when it is used the other way it does dig in.

I have done this for years but it does take a certain technique to get it right, and it only works with paint that is over primer or sealer, you can not peal paint off of paint.

Thats probably the deal the paint on it now is over the second paint job then over primer/sealer then over the original paint / primer.Im using Aircraft remover on the steel parts a little messy but it works.

Got a tip from the paint guy he said when using paint stripper like Aircraft Remover brush it in one direction and then cover it with plastic rap,he said it will go all the way to the metal and even take off bondo.I'll find out Sunday if it works.

The plastic rap helps speed up the process a little. Still got 2 fenders and a door to do.
