Small change in tire diameter
Hey guys im new here and kinda new to drag racing. I have basicaly a stock 01ss ls1 camaro and best 1/4mile is 13.074 at 107.33mph. I recently bought some mt et street radials which are 26.1 diameter vs the 25.7 diameter stock tires. I did the 13.074 with the et street radials. My question is would that 25.7 stock tire be just enough to get me to 12.999? I know .4 less diameter is very small difference but so isnt that .074. I would like to be able to say I hit 12s without a stall.

A lot of guys use this calaculator to determine RPM / Gearing / MPH on their rides. Play with the numbers and it'll tell you a bunch. I set my drivetrain & tire combo up using this and it worked well.

Re: Small change in tire diameter
You may have very well been able to get down to a 12.99 with just a good tune up.
What you basically did by going to a taller tire is changed the gear ratio. Will it make a big affect, maybe not but you may come out of the hole better which may get you down the track a little faster.
The best advice I've always been told is, upgrade your ignition, upgrade your exhaust and upgrade the air flow coming into your engine. These few items will most likely get you into the 12's area that your looking for.
Oh yea, Welcome to the sight. I can't beleive Harry let this one slip but YEAH another Camaro owner.....
Nova guys, beware, we're taking over.....

Re: Small change in tire diameter
Hey thanks for the response guys. I actually do have a couple mods but not much. Long tube headers, off road y pipe, borla catback, super sucker ram air,air lid, filter, smooth bellow and I got a tune before the headers, ory, and ramair. I know maybe a lttle tweak in the tune for the headers would probly help a little but im not doing anything to the car for a while. Just really curious how much time would improve with that .4 tire diameter difference. Maybe you guys could weigh in on a couple threads?....

I realise im probly obsessing about something so small but I think the questions are good ones.

It will probably run 12's on a day with better conditions, like in the fall.

With a street tire may not be enough traction to see a difference.
Many times moving to a larger tire (sub 30" and narrow) a car will go faster due to the additional traction from the larger foot print.
The MT tire should have a traction advantage over a street tire and should give you more traction.

I would think your 60ft would suffer from the stock tires giving you a slower et, you mau actually pick up a little mph but thats doesnt seem to be your goal. The other factor is did you actually check the rollout or measure the tires you have, sizes listed on paper dont always match up to actuall size. I would look into a gear change and some rear suspensions upgades there is a ton of stuff for the 4th gen f bodies out there.
Re: Small change in tire diameter
I just read your thread on ls1,what track did you run at? NED is a far better track than LVD at least it used to be. You might want to try and get down to Island Dragway in NJ or better yet Atco you will see some 12sec passes there. LVD is close to you but has ALWAYS been slower than any of the other tracks around.Ive run mid 10.50's at LV and with the same type of weather have gone high 10.30's at NED and Atco.

Yes I deff agree but the main question is about size not traction. The first couple passes of the day when the track is fresh and sun is out I havent had a problem with traction on the street tires. Maybe because they are brand spankin new idk.
Also stock tires all the way around are 270 40 17 and when I change the rears at the track I have a mt et street radial 255 50 16 so they are a little narrower but .4 taller.

Rollout and all that are really new stuff to me. Im still green at this. But yea I should check to see if their measurments are right. I could have swarn that those mts looked a lot bigger than what the stats are compaired to street the tires

I go to ned and its the same distance as lvd for me. anywhere fron 2-3 hours depends on traffic and time of day. Someone else told me to go to englishtown, atco and ill do 12s no prob. But I really cant do all that travel. Im not setup to do that. As a matter of fact I stuff the mts, tools, other shit in the back of my car, drive up there, change tires, race, and reverse on the way home. Yea I know,Im screwed if something breaks like ahhh the pussy 10 bolt. I know ill be hating life when I do break somethin
