Cheap Racing Radios ?

#1 Post by John_Heard » Mon Jul 01, 2013 4:25 pm

Been considering getting some cheap walkie talkies to take to the track and improvising driver/crew radio setup. The "pro" type headset deals just looking too expensive - anyone ever tried walkie talkies with maybe a throat mic in the car? I'm sure RF can be a big issue when the car is running, but I'm thinking they would still be usable going to the line - return road and stuff? Anyone tried these?

Just for shits and giggles I went ahead and bought a set of Midland LXT600VP3 Walkie Talkies, friend of mine said they use these at work and really like them.

Going to play around with them and see how it works out. I got a "Black Ops" type head set / mic deal lol - Not sure if I can make that work in the helmet or not, but going to give it a shot.

Not to sure, MAKO doesn't have any more races scheduled there this year, but we might try to get over there for one of the local 275 races or something.

We finally tried these out last weekend, and they worked decent. They couldn't quite reach full length of the track to the pits at MoKan, but I think if I move the radio in the car it might help a bit. They work great for while we're towing the car back, etc.
