Return of the Death Nova

#1 Post by Craig W. » Wed Sep 25, 2013 8:41 pm

Its been a long road but I'm nearing the end of the rebuild process. After last year's encounter with the wall and a major shift to the rules for 8.5 racing, I decided to move up to True Ten 5. My heads are not legal for the new limited style 8.5 classes in my area and I have no desire to change them after just a season of racing. The added stability and traction of the bigger tires will hopefully keep me from repeating last summer's events.

I'll be posting some pictures I've taken during the rebuild. I don't have all the details documented but most of the major stuff. Here's what I started with.

Its also mangled the front right corner. Took out the fender, bumper, grille, pretty much all the trim on the front, right side control arms, both right side wheels, bent the subframe a little, etc. Here it is stripped down and the suspension back together.

Here we are at the body shop. I just had the rear of the car and the roof done for now.

I moved the springs inboard and added sliders. Very simple setup but plenty of strength with the gussets.

I left it where I can put the shackles back in the stock location easily and bolt the original 10-bolt back in.

Lot less weight back there at the back on the springs than you'd think there would be huh? Mounts look good, should work great.

Yeah, the rear of the springs are kind of along for the ride somewhat. Straight angle iron wouldn't have been good but those gussets add a large amount of strength.

Wow, it looks great Craig....

I know I'm going to catch some flak for this, but man, seeing these Nova's make me wish I didn't sell my 70 Nova....

When you hoping to get some TNT in?

Thanks. I'm going to leave all my bottles at home for the first night and just be sure the car is going to go straight, stop well, the chute deploys properly, etc. Then if all goes well, I'll start trying to go fast the next weekend.

You'd better leave them at home if you don't intend on spraying it because after that first shakedown pass you'll be ready to stick one in it! Might as well put full N/A timing in it too..

Maybe there should be a "nova" shootout for the bragging rights of DragStuffs fastest nova, but then again, seeing it's John site, we might already know that answer...LOL
