Going to try the New Leashed Controller

#1 Post by John_Heard » Wed Sep 25, 2013 12:16 pm

Due to some issues I've been having with my current Nitrous controller which we haven't been able to fix, going to try out Leashed Electronic's new one Randy recently released.

Randy promises there is no activation delay with this one, which is something I've been fighting, looking forward to trying this one out!

I like Randy's stuff. Haven't used any of it yet but I've been impressed with his knowledge.

Keep us posted on your results with it.

I have to say I like the idea that he had to add a relay on the hot side of the main power. There is a rare situation where a MOSFET can die, and when it does it will make a dead short. In other words you lift the throttle and the nitrous can still be on.

The way Leashed does it with a relay tied to the throttle switch wire, if you lift it takes the current off the mosfets, it's a nice safety factor I think. Sure it's a rare occurrence but good to have just in case.

That's a nice feature. I kept the relays on the hot side of my setup for that reason. I didn't want a failed controller to lead to much bigger issues.

Does it also have a transbrake input?

Yes - it has a mechanical transbrake input. I'd prefer and electronic one however Randy says the interrupt doesn't add any significant delay to it.

Do you mean that its got a 2nd relay for the interupt when you say mechanical?

I'm going to have to take a good look to see if I'm getting any delay. I've actually been programming in a .1sec delay but don't think I'll need it on the bigger tires.

Yes, the way it's setup it has a separate relay board with main power, transbrake interrupt relay and purge relay,

Sounds like it would really simplify installation.

No unfortunately we were not able to use the leashed controller in my car. There is something weird that was burning up the controller outputs on the leashed unit - it did it twice, but only in my car. Randy tested my solenoids on his bench and couldn't get it to fail, but everytime we put it in the car and it would kill it. Randy refunded my money and we put the old controller back in it a few weeks ago.

I have to say Randy stands behind his products and takes care of his customers, in my case it didn't work out due to some unique circumstances. I know other people (Chris Wilson) that use the Leashed Controller and it's working great for them, so don't judge it based on my experience. I did get enough testing on it to tell you it is very fast, no delays in the output and would not hesitate on using it on a different setup, it just didn't work out on mine.

Thats good to know. It seems simple to use wich will be good for me and its not a million dollars like some of the others out there is wat turned me on to it. I like how simple it is to wire also.

Hey John, just wondering if the delay with your current controller you're talking about is the W.O.N progressive. I've noticed that if I set mine at 0 delay, there still is a lil one. Kind of makes it hard to tune my launch as the car has already hit the tires, started to transfer weight, then the nitrous hits and upsets the balance and blows the tires off. Just wondering if you're fighting the same problem.

Yes, the one I'm having an issue with a delay is the WON Max Extreme, we've been trying to get to the bottom of it but haven't yet. It has a .08 to .1 sec delay in activation we haven't been able to get rid of yet.

It sounds like yours might have a longer delay than mine. You might contact them as no one else apparently has been having issues with this but me so far.

There are some software revisions that were made last year that improves this stuff. What model are you using, and what number does it say when you turn it on displayed on the screen?
