Anti-roll bar needed?

#1 Post by sverbus » Mon Mar 17, 2008 4:18 pm

Getting ready to gut the interior to put the 8pt to 10pt conversion kit in and also to put in new carpet and door panels and while I was at it I'm going to pull the fuel cell and redo the rear firewall.

I also gotta put the metal cover over the area where the fuel cell sump comes through the trunk floor and redo the mount for my fuel pump as the Magnafuel pumps are so big it won't fit where my old Holley pump fit.

My question is while I got all that torn down, it would easy to install a anti-roll bar, but I'm not entirely sure I need one. We were yanking the left front wheel last summer, and got a best of 1.46 60' time and there's ALOT left in this car. I should have no problem getting a 1.3x 60' time and a 9sec pass this year.

Hell I blipped the throttle on the last pass cause it got a little loose out of the hole and still went a 10.81 with fuel pressure fading the entire way down the track with a lowly fuel pressure of 3psi at the big end. (hence the reason for the Magnafuel pump.)

Thoughts? advice?

thanks guys, I know I'll get some good advice from everyone.

Install an anti-roll bar, even if you don't need it because a car looks so much better with the front wheels level in the air, not mention the lost E.T. from twisting the rear suspension all up. It helped my car.

I think my car works a lot better with one. However, looking back now at the problems I was having a lot of it was due to shitty shocks that couldn't control the hit well. I believe with some better shocks there would have been less of a need for the anti roll bar - would good shocks have eliminated the need for it or not? Don't know right off hand. I certainly don't think the anti roll bar would be anything that would hurt even with good shocks. In fact it will probably let you get by with softer shock settings which should handle down track bumps better.

It's a good idea I think.

Yeah, from most of my reading so far on other sites and here, it seemed as if it couldn't hurt, but wanted to make sure cause this year, I'm really on a tight budge as my wife and I are starting a family.

I currently run the Koni SPA-1's with my monoleaf's. They seem to work real well.

I agree with Mick, what brand do you guys like? and does the bar attach directly to the rear end housing? Do you have to remove the rear from the car to weld the perchs for the bar on it?

thanks guys..

I don't have any great ones of the roll bar but maybe this old pic will give ya an idea of what I did on mine. It's a Vanishing Point chrome moly bar.

Yes the links attach to the rear end housing with some tabs welded to the rear end. The link bars have heim ends for adjustment on them.

nice pic there John. I've never seen that much of the shock come through the floor like that? I only had to cut a hole so that the very top of the shock could come up through the floor.

How does having the anti-roll bar installed affect handling of the car? So I see the top mounts for the top Heim ends extend toward the front of the car so that they are right above the rear end housing? Is that correct?

I also see the extra strenthing that you have added to the roll bar itself to keep all that from flexing.

Also, do you run a dual battery? anyone with good pics of their dual battery and fuel pump mounting please post or send in PM as I'm trying to collect the best idea's of where to mount all this crap. :)

thanks

It's just where everything worked out at with the length of the anti-roll bar arms, shock mounts, etc.

The main difference I noticed was the car launched level vs twisted up some, it's always drove straight regardless so not any difference there. 60's improved substantially but that was also due to the shock changes and other changes all made at the same time.

I run a single 16 volt battery at this time.

Here is the pictures I have of the anti-roll bar in my car. It's a Bears Performance Products Pro Stock Kit. And yes, the end links really are that short.

I've got a Mark Williams in mine.

I started out with an Art Morrison, but it had a though bolt set-to mount the arm to the bar. Not a very good design. The MW is a splined shaft.

Are you talking about the mounts where the anti-rollbar hooks up to the frame. They are swivl bearings that a machinst buddy swears by. The thinking behind them is that if there is any chassis flex when the car launches, that the ant-rollbar won't bind, allowing the suspension to move freely.

I installed mine last night. Comp Engineering one. Went on very well. My question is what track locator setup are you guys running. I put the panhard bar back on for now but am not a big fan of that. Any suggestions? remember I am a 4 link car, 1984 old cutlass.

thanks

I don't have a very good pic. Mine's a wishbone. Set up so it can be mounted either on top of the housing to the upper link or on the bottom as it is in this shot. I've wondered if a watts link would work?

With the wishbone, do you have any side to side movement at all? I would like to design something else that works, well, anyway, my mind is turnin.

By the way, I love that car of yours.
