Subframe Ties

#1 Post by sbcnova » Tue Jun 20, 2006 7:04 pm

I have recently purchased a set of weld in CE subframe ties in a quest to make my 60's more consistant. The directions say that I have to relocate and the leaf springs and notch the floor board to use these. Has anyone else ran into these problems? Does anyone have a pics with these installed or know if this is even true? Thanks for any help.

You dont have to relocate the springs if I remember correctly . You can move the springs inboard but dont have to. You will have to notch the floor where your feet go if you were a passinger in the back. If you dont want to do that get a set of bolt ins they mount under the front leaf spring pad and bolt to subframe under the body mount. You can weld them in after you bolt them . The weld ins provide a new front spring mount that will go next to your original one but Im pretty sure you can put them in without using the new location.

Those are what I used on mine to move the front leaf spring mount inboard, with stock frame rails you will need to notch the frame rail and the cut a slot in the floor board in order to use them. They'll put the new front spring hanger in line with the frame rail. If you don't want to move the front mount, I'd suggust getting the bolt in models and weld those into place.

I removed my bolt on frame connectors and sold them on ebay a few months ago. I just didn't like how they looked under there hanging below the floor pan. They were the ones made by Jegs, they were 2"X 2" so they are a little beefer than the CE bolt in kind.

Beside I want to mini tub my car and move the springs inboard, relocate my shocks so I can tuck some 295 or 315 up in there.

Does anyone know of a website where someone shows pics of mini tubbing a 75-79 X body ? I'm sure there isn't much differance between the earlier models than the late models but it would be cool if you know of a website.

Beyond, you mentioned notching the frame rails, do you have any pics of how you notched yours ?

I like your website, it's motovating and informative.

Thanks

I used the bolt in Jegs parts, but welded them in place. Also tied the roll bar into them. Car is stiff as hell.
Results are good as well. Didn't need mini tubs. Been 1.37 60 ft with 9" Hoosier radials.

Thanks Beyond

I saw that picture on your Nova site, was hoping to see how the frame was notched before you welded in the connector.

Here's a link to a website that has some pictures of a Nova some of you guys might find interesting. I like how they modified the floor pan for extra exhaust clearance, I want to install aftermarket tubs like this Nova did, wonder who makes them ? Car sits nice and low over the 295/65 M/T Drag Radials.

Sorry Bruce I didn't take any pictures of the notch prior to welding them in. The new spring eye holes ended up being setup so that the top hole was slightly above the height of the original Nova spring mount location and the lower is about 1/2" below the original height. The notch is about 3/4 of the frame height.

I've seen that W2W build up - they did a real nice job, I really like how they did several things on that car. The rear tubs are just standard steel tubs like any chassis shop sells I think.
