light weight tube fontend for 67 camaro

#1 Post by dragrace67camro » Fri Nov 14, 2008 5:52 pm

I am still looking to get my car to cut a better light on a .400 tree

I am looking to take as much weight off the front as I can

I have seen smith racecraft font end kits ( all tube ) and they are very nice but wanted to see what else is out there - ANY IDEAS

Kim Smith (Smith Racecraft) has engineered one of the best front ends out there. He's here in town and I've visited his shop on occasions. Great people, great workmanship. I would have his front end under my car if it were allowed in the class I run.

All the other tube fronts are probably heavier as they are designed for street/strip or road race.Heidts , Chris Alston , Total Cost Involved,Fatman,Detroit Spped & Engineering,Martz Chassis, and some others.Lighter than the stock subframe but not as good as the Smith one.

I prolly shouldn't even *go* here but is that a full replacement for the OEM front clip ? Meaning I could pretty much hang the inners, outers and radiator core like the stock build ?

And like he said, when you can, please post pix :) I'd love to see the result....

Geezo, that is *way* beyond sexy !!!! That'd go a long ways towards offsetting some of the penalty wieght of this big block...

<laffin> I'm just not sure how I'd explain to mamma that this is something that I just have to have....

just out of curiousity, how much weight difference is there between the smith front end and a stock subframe with oe style discs up front? i'm just kind of curious becuase they came up in as a topic of conversation at a rules meeting last week. i know you can lose about 45-50 on a stock subframe just buying control arms and converting to a rack. I'm just kind of curious what the weight difference actually was.

If both frames being of equal brakes, rack and pinion, tubular a-arms your talking about 30-40 lbs with m/s and 50-60lbs c/m as I mentioned in the meeting.

That's good news. I should be getting my pistons in the next week or two. I'd say another month and she'll be on the road again. Are you going to run drag radial or the entry level class?
