Leaf Spring Hangers

#1 Post by hugger73hatch » Sun Mar 29, 2009 7:05 pm

Ok, I got my Caltracs in and pulled the old leaf springs out today. My bushings are in horrible shape, so I have decided to upgrade to polyurethane bushings all the way around the car. In the process I had to cut one of the leaf spring hanger bolts to get it off, plus they were in bad shape as well. Any suggestions on new hangers? http://www.jegs.com/i/Energy+Suspension ... R/10002/-1# This set says for multi leaf, which my car was, but I went to the split monos from Caltrac, so will this still work?

Since you have them out and need to buy something I would think its the perfect time to put in sliders.

Sliders have no added value to how a cal-trac suspesion works. According to Calvert. Save your money!

I was kind of thinking the same thing as I didn't see anything on their website about them. Does my first link look ok as far as hangers go?

I think those are fine.
I'm using these:

The reason sliders aren't on thair web site is calvert doesn't recommend them.

Thanks. I sent them an email and plan on calling today if I don't hear anything by this afternoon.

That's interesting... Did you happen to ask anyone at Calvert if they've even actually tried them? Or if they have sat down and thought about why they might be useful?

What I was actually told by Scott with Calvert Racing that there is no performance gain by running a set of sliders. He said that unless you have a binding issue your trying to fix they're not needed. He also said the sliders do the same thing that the shackles do.

Last yr. I looked a guy's car that was built for the extreme 10.5 class that had shakles.
I don't know the guy's name but I have seen his car which is a 76 Camaro in a 10.5 tire, cal-tracs, no anti roll bar, no sliders, with rancho shocks, and a 632 c.i. motor run in the 4.90's range. He runs with the DFW real outlaw street gang now. I think he's doing something right if he can run that fast with out sliders. The car is a back half car with leaf springs and cal-tracs. I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not.

Guess my setup's all wrong, might as well start cutting all that unneeded junk out and save some weight. Next thing I'm gonna hear about someone going 4.70's @3900 lbs using comp eng. shocks, on 7 cyls., against a head wind.

What is the advatage of sliders over shackles? I've never had to deal with them, but just curious.

A slider eliminates the orbiting motion that the shackle creates on the spring eye. With shackles the rear spring eye travels up and down, actually trying to go round and round the top shackle bolt. Sliders just let the spring compress and extend without changing so much geometry of the spring, and even lessens the amount the pinion angle changes during the suspension travel.

Good stuff. Seems to me that sliders would actually be benefical over shackels.

You would think so but Calvert says no benefit over shackles. Call yourself, here's the # (661) 728-9600 if don't believe me.

Oh and I never said they weren't a good idea. Just no benefit

Spoke to them today. In their opinion of you are running their setup, with the split monos, save your money and just use the shackles. I figured they are smarter than I am so I am gonna go that route for now.
