Leaf Spring to Coilover Swap

My Camaro presently has ladder bars with mono leaf springs and some kind of non adustable shocks out back. I would like to switch to coilover shocks. Looks to be pretty easy to do, but I'm not sure how to figure out how much travel I should use. Any suggestions on how to figure this out?

Details on the car are here => 68 Camaro, except I now have the 408 SBC (650 HP) in it.

I have always been told to buy the longest shock you can if you have adjustable brackets. If it doesn't adjustable brackets than you need 2"-2 1/2"s of shock shaft showing at ride hight.......

I just recently talked to my friend from S&W about QA-1 coilovers and here is what he suggested I should use, but keep in mind, this is a single adjustable shock and you may want to go with a double adjustable.

QA1-50-019A: 16-3/8" extended, 11-5/8" compressed - uses 12" x 2-1/2" spring, recommended ride height 13-1/2"-14".

I also use 130lbs. spring and like the others stated, an adjustable lower shock mount.

The advice you got from S&W was fundamentally sound. You'll like this longer shock because it will allow the rear end to separate from the car more when you're swapping slicks.
