pinion angle?

#1 Post by joe69Z » Mon Feb 20, 2012 12:51 pm

I'm almost finished my 78' camaro, What pinion angle should I set my pinion angle -2 to -4 degrees checking off pinion yolk. It's still has leaf springs and my home maded cal tracs, Came out PERFECT, also installings sliders, Got some for $95.00 from Speedway motors. Roller sliders made for Mopar just made rear bushings to fit thier pins fits great! Thanks Guy's!

Depends, are you using polyurethane or aluminum leaf spring bushings?

You should set it in relationship with the drive shaft angle not the ground. There are millions of posts on forums everywhere about this everyone has got opinions on how to do it. I would say a good starting point is around -4* you dont want too much or your u-joint might bind.

I'm still waiting for someone to actually measure pinion rotation on one of these while going downtrack other than guessing. But yeah, it's generally accepted that somewhere around 3 or 4 degrees down is in the ballpark.

I talk to Calvert a few years back on this subject and they had done some research on this subject but only on the launch and only up to 700 hp. They're opinion was "no more than 4* P/A is needed."

I would say sounds about right.

He said they used a small camera and a bracket with a measuring scale on it. Seems simple enough. He did say one could try wedge's in 2* increments to see if he car changes for better or worse. He has heard of set up as far out as 8* but does not recommend it.

I'm planning on trying to measure it on mine when I get a chance. There's a lot on of those camera's can show up. Like this one which is a real old one from my car, the one we learned that it was running out of travel. Shocks weren't valved stiff enough.
