initial timing

Could you recomend an inital timing for me. I have a blue bushing in with two light blue springs. It is set at 16 now so 37 all in at 3200. I am thinking of going to the black with the same springs 19 to give 37 all in at 2800. I do have a vac hooked up but would get rid of it iff you think I should. It is a street car but it is mostly just driven to the track. I don't think I would like to lock it out.

chevy 355 10.3 to 1, 750 holley hp, rpm air gap, 195 trickflow heads. 284 cam 228/234 480/494 @110, 1 3/4 long headers 2.5 with h pipe, th350 3200 stall, 370 rear 27". Also have 125 nitrous with a 4* retard, but I dont think that will matter.

You've got a good starting point now. Just need to tune it at the track or the dyno to see what final timing it likes. You're not far off most likely.

I have played with it on thy dyno and it like 37 not much more than 36. I was just wondering about initial. I need to change the bushing (what a pain) What do you think 18-19 would do?

IMO I like to run as much initial as possible (with no hard starting issues) and ramp in the total before 3000. If you lock out the distributor the timing control takes out around 20* for starting and starts the curve at 1000 rpm and brings it all in by 3000 ( I think)

When do you think I would run into hard start or worse kick back. If I put in the black the it will be all in at 2800 18* start then to 36*

Whats the reasoning for not wanting to lock it out? With you runing the nitrous i would definately lock it out

18* should start fine but all engines are different you just have to try it.My buddys 496 with 10-1 compression starts locked out at 38* with no start retard :?:

I used to have a problem with kick back and broke a couple starter noses off, was told to crank motor over and then turn ignition on , started doing that and no problems after that, have heard people do this with motors that are locked, with no start retard, thats what I will continue to do with new motor that will be 13.2 to 1. so if you have a seperate starter button and ignition switch its a good way to start her up
