I currently have a MSD 6al and a "start/retard control, high rpm retard" box and the coil that is made for the 6al system.
I have a chance to buy a 7al-2 from a friend, and it's in great shape and well taken care of. Would I benefit from his 7al-2? and if so do I need to change coils and is that start retard box obsolete then?

7al-2 is a very good box.
you do need to change coils. i recommend the 8251.
your start retard will still work.

I've used a al-2 and a al-3 both boxes are great boxes. I have to say i like the al-3 better.
