MSD Noise

#1 Post by Craig W. » Fri Nov 05, 2010 10:43 pm

My buddy Bruce (the other half of 2QuickNovas.com) has a MSD 6 BTM box. Its making a high pitched noise and he's also getting a lot of interference through the radio. Didn't do this before. The car has been sitting for a while and now has the noise issues.

I'm thinking possibly a bad ground. Anybody seen this before and know what the cure is?

Yes, my 7al would whine all the time. I bought it used but it never seen to hurt anything. I didn't have a radio in it so I can't comment on that, but MSD said it's a ground and/or noise issue. They sell the ground filters that's supposed to eliminate the feedback, but I don't know how well they work.

After you check the routing of the wiring and the connections, see if the power or the ground is sharing a connection with something else, sometimes the noise can bleed over from something else. On the late model GM stuff that still has a cap and rotor, 4.3, 5.7, etc. we get a lot of noise just before the cap and rotor burns through or a spark plug wire starts to short to ground.
I am not really sure what the question is, but I am pretty sure the answer is Big Block.

The ground should go to the battery

As said check the grounds.
Does it have a woven ground/braided also?

I don't know how he has his grounds run. He's a good friend but lives in Minnesota. I haven't seen the car since 2001.

Not sure if he's had a chance to look into it more or not. Over a foot of snow on the ground up there now he says, so I'm sure he's done playing for a few months.

Thanks.
