nitrous converter question

#1 Post by rustbucket » Sun Feb 15, 2009 8:02 pm

72 nova ,406 cid, 3120 pounds with me, 4.86 gear with powerglide.

I have 2 converters. One is a ptc spragless 10 inch that stalls 2900 on the mat. My car runs a 6.70 na with this converter with a 1.46 sixty. On a 225 shot it runs a 1.300 sixty and a 6.0 et@116 mph.

The other converter is a ptc 8 inch spragless that stalls 5000-5200 on the mat. Ive only used this converter with a na 383 flat top motor and it did really well. Never tried it on the bottle.
My question is...I think the 406 would probably run a 6.40-6.50 with the loose converter. Could I spray it less than the tight converter and still run the 6.0 I need to? It seems to me that the closer to 6.0 na would mean less nitrous to run the number.
4 or 5 tenths vs. 7 tenths.
My block is a gm block and I hate to keep spraying 225 every pass.
Im currently shifting @ 6500 with the tight converter.
thanks, tony

Yes with the 8" converter you should be able to run the 6.00 with less nitrous , the only down side would be , it will only work for 1/8 mile because you will most likely over RPM the motor in the 1/4 mile. So it sounds like a pretty good plan for your 6.00 index. give it a try and at the worst case you may need your converter man to make a small adjustment AFTER you try it and see just how it works. Just curious here, but why the spragless? My experience with spragless converters has not been good. I lost 2-3 tenths in the 1/8 and about 4 mph. It was like driving into a 100 mph headwind. So I went with a mechanical diode and the car picked right back up where it was at before wiping out the sprag.

Craig I agree with you 100% , but my goal is to help with tech questions with out being critical of other brand converters and to express my opinions with out sounding as if everyone has to switch to me as there converter man. Since you asked specificly about sprag vs spragless i will respond . I feel there is no time when a spragless will make the car accelerate faster than a sprag (granted the converter design is right for the car)

Thanks for the input Marty. I was mostly curious why Rustbucket went with a spragless, but its good to hear your experiences as well.

That's a great approach to answering questions. Unbiased help is what its all about

well, when I put this jalopy together I needed a converter and a friend sold me a tci (so called)nitrous converter cheap. After running it about a year we determined it had around 30% slip. Needing a converter quick I ran up to ptc and picked one up. They are a short drive from my house. I bought the $450.00 cheapest converter they had. After installing it my 60 ft went from a dismal 1.48 on the bottle to a 1.300. My best went from a 6.40 to a 6.0. Ive run that converter since. The second (looser) converter was purchased by a engine builder to test their motor in my car. When the oppertunity was presented to me to test for them, I told them my converter was too tight to run their motor n/a. At that point they said they would supply a new converter and it was also a spragless ptc.
With my budget im lucky to get to race at all. I just have to use what finiancially availible to me. Theirs no doubt chance converters are the shiz and I would love to have one but its just not in my budget at this time.

I would LUV to have a chance convertor as well, like you, the budget is limited. I have run (and I still have one in the parts bin) PTC in the past. very good to me for the price...If I ever hit the lottery, or my kids get out of college  I will have a shiny bolt together...

I've heard lots of good stuff about PTC and seen a lot of fast cars with their sticker on the windows.

I didn't mean to make it sound like you should be using a different brand. I was just curious about the spragless.

Thanks guys for the nice things you have said or implied about my products. Again my goal here is to be as helpful as possible with converter questions regardless of brand.

Keith Neal is a world class prankster , once he sent a converter in to be repaired and put 2 dead fish in the box with the converter !!! My shop stunk for a week. I have tried to get him back but nothing has topped the dead fish , by the way he shipped the day before a week end so it took a total of 4 days to get to me.
