Engine upgrade, need opinions

#1 Post by Ls7camaro » Sat Nov 29, 2008 4:00 pm

Hey All, Hope the Winter Projects are Going as planned.

I have a question. Currently a standard bore 454. I had LS7 Pistons and an LS7 cam. It was an original LS7 Crate. GM 990 rect heads. I wanted lower compression to drive on the street so I put in TRW LS6 Replacement pisons, then ran into probs with the cam, no room on the Intake side. So I went with a Comp LS6 + camshaft, car ran 12.001 @ 110 and change 60' is right around 1.65 with a TH350 3000stall and 4.10 10bolt. I have the car back halved/cage added and all that. BUT wanted to know what I need to do to put the LS7 pistons and cam in. And just for Bench racing sake what kind of improvement is there going to be? I know the LS7 pistons have some big domes and I think its the GM 180 Camshaft??? thats what I was told, 580/620 lift and big duration. Not touching the heads they are still unported and I didn't think I had to do much if anything to them because the have big intake ports 2.19/1.88 valves. I was thinking of just going in with a flap wheel and taking the casting flash off just kinda polish a bit. Any thoughts? And what about running E85 through this mix? Is it worth it?

Happy Holiday
I can't wait for race season, this has got to be the year.

My dad had an Ls7 with same set up as yours ZL-1 cam with a tunnel ram in a 70's camaro with a 350th that ran10.80s at 125mph at3400lbs. This was around 20 years ago. He also had an Ls-6 before and ran 11.50 at 119.

why would you wan't to run a old dinosaur cam?? with whats available in todays profiles ya can't go wrong in choosing a modern day cam,IMHO,if it werew mine i would put the ls-7 pistons back in, and choose a modern day roller profile.

I have all the parts, and would rather spend the money on finishing the rear end of the car. I know I need to rebalance and change a few parts around.
Have the GM 180 Camshaft
Forged Crank
Dimple Rods
Big Domed Pistons
GM 990 heads
Victor +1" intake
Proform 850 mainbody/baseplate
TH350 w/3500 stall
and GM 10 bolt w/4.10's
Run a 28.5 x 10.5 slick but want to bump that to a 12 rim and get a wider tire.

Like I said I have the parts, just want to put them together and run the car, was thinking about actually running E-85 I am starting to see it at a couple pumps in OHIO.

Thanks for the Input.

E-5 is at a lot of pumps out here I was thinking of converting my 950hp with the parts from quick fuel. Im going to do a lot of research before I do. I know some people who already have done it and it works fine. I think there is an E-85.com site with a forum. Way back we dynoed a LS7 crate motor and if I remember it made around 550. I dont think you need a wider tire I would spend the money somewhere else. Just my .02
