468 VS 496 ???
I wanted to get a few opinions. I am getting ready to build a new engine. I dont have an outrageous amount of money to put in it. I have heard alot of good about the 468 AND the 496. I am going to purchase aftermarket heads for either. How do you guys feel about that extra stroke? It will be for my 69 Nova race ready 2900.

I would build the 496, I think that's a big improvement over the 468. Or take it out a little further and make a 505 out of it, then you can join the 505 club here

Sure John and leave me out in the Cold with my 496 Haha. If I were to do mine again, I would have went to a 505ci and changed some other things too.Beyond wrote:I would build the 496, I think that's a big improvement over the 468. I think it depends on your chassis setup and planned/intended usage. To generalize "bigger is better" is a pretty broad generalization. If your car is 2900 lb and backhalved it will easily run mid 9's with a conservative 13.5: 468. Certainly, if this is a "small tire" bracket car go with the 468. You'll never consistantly hook a 4.25" stroke on 9 or 10" tires.
How about some more info.

Bob's worked his ass off to get that thing hooking. On marginal tracks it's still got traction issues. He was at Mokan last weekend and blew the tires off about as often as he hooked. Luckily for him, he's been hooking pretty decent at OIR on bracket nights.Beyond wrote:You hear that Bob West?? Might as well give it up!40Coupe wrote:You'll never consistantly hook a 4.25" stroke on 9 or 10" tires.
Welcome to the site 40 Coupe...
Something about 60% of 3900 lb on the nose of a heavy street/strip BBC Chevelle that doesn't translate into an optimal bracket car. That said, they can be made to work and Bob's done an outstanding job.
One thing I have against the stroker BBC's is unless you're willing to shell out some $$$ you end up with a Chinese crankshaft.
ah so 366 passes and counting Scat LW profiled is "gettin er done"

You need Stahl headers to get into the TENS? SHHHHHHHH, don't tell my 2" x 3" Hedmans thatshooked wrote:My 496 has about broke me. Still got to buy a set of headers, which now are definitely Stahls, 1) do to proximity, and 2) do to short 10 day build time. Lets hope it will put my 3900LB chevelle into the 10's.
505 cubes,10.5-1, dual plane RPM intake, 781's now Brodix RR ovals,Comp XR286R on a 107lsa, cheapy Hedman headers, 950HP, ATI 8" MRT converter, TH400, and 4.10's with 30" Hoosier radial slicks, 3900lbs WITH driver, will run 10's anytime its unloaded, except for maybe a car club challenge starting line, running street tired cars with slick tired cars. I wasnt the only one having traction issues
Last weekend my 60fts ranged from 1.434-1.439, 6 passes total.

If my 496 performs half as good as your 505 I will be ecstatic! The 2x3 headmans would not clear my steering shaft without a hefty ding. Perhaps the Hooker supercomps then for me with the 3" pipes and mufflers I have off of my 402. What do you think? I need to save some money on the rest of this. Oh yeah, 3900 lbs, 4135 with my big butt.
