Vortec Heads

Vortec Heads
I just bought a set of vortec heads to put on my 383check that i'm building. The stock valves in them are 1.94 int and 1.5 exh. Would it be better to use stock size stainless valves or put 2.02 and 1.6 valves in them? This is gonna be a street/strip truck. Any help would ne thankful
Re: Vortec Heads
Be sure whoever does the work is good with Vortec heads. Many people have ended up with worse heads after working over their Vortecs.
I know Total Engine Airflow used to be good with them and had luck upgrading them to Ferrea valves.

Re: Vortec Heads
We put a 383 with Votrec heads in a camaro for a customer it had the stock size SS valves with just some casting clean up work, a hyd flat cam, 9.5:1 compression it made 430 hp and ran extremely well.Outlaw2 wrote:I just bought a set of vortec heads to put on my 383check that i'm building. Re: Vortec Heads
Thanks guys, SC Racing that's what I was wanting to here! I found a article that Hot Rod Mag had in 09'the called the junkyard 350 build they made to a 383. I've got a good start with a block bored. 030" over already just drawing up plans on paper now for my build. I'm building a truck, plans are so far; vortec heads w/stock size ss valves, 750 edlebrock performer Carb, victor intake, 490-274 comp cam, 383 rotator assembly w/flat top pistons, headers. Looking at a 400 turbo trans, 2500 stall and 4.11 gears and trac bars. Anything else I missed? Any help or info I'd like to share would be helpful. Oh, and gonna put a set of DOT drag radials on the back. Thank s guys
Re: Vortec Heads
I would use a RPM Air Gap type manifold a Holley style carb maybe 750-850 cfm and a roller cam, if its not in the budget for the roller go with a flat solid. Im not going to recommend a cam but I think it needs to bigger than what your looking at the one that was in the 383 we did was bigger I dont know the exact spect but it was something like 234*/ 244* @.050 with .540 ish lift???Outlaw2 wrote:Thanks guys, SC Racing that's what I was wanting to here! Re: Vortec Heads
K, that's just what comp said might be a good cam nothing bought or etched in stone yet. Still trying to build it in myhead and on paper first. How was that set up as far as drivability on the road? I want a good engine for street/strip use. Thanks i'll do more research on the cam.sc racing wrote:I would use a RPM Air Gap type manifold a Holley style carb maybe 750-850 cfm and a roller cam, if its not in the budget for the roller go with a flat solid. Re: Vortec Heads
Car is a 100% street car but it does have a 5 speed so no converter issues to deal with. He runs a 3.89 gear with about a 26" tall tire.
Re: Vortec Heads
K, sounds good. I was gonna use 28" tires on my truck with a turbo 400, 3000 stall and 4.11 gears. Decided to go with the performer rpm air gap intake and EX284 comp cam. Things are looking better! Thanks guys! I really appreciate the help and advise.sc racing wrote:Car is a 100% street car but it does have a 5 speed so no converter issues to deal with.
