Ordering new 555. What upgrades would you do?

#1 Post by 1nicenova » Mon Jun 09, 2008 1:16 pm

The used musi 555 I was looking at buying didn't check out to good. Couldn't hear it run, fuel pump was bad & saw a little bearing metal when draining the oil. Had a lot of gas in the oil. Rings are probably washed & possible bearings.
So I think I'm going to go with a new musi 555 shortblock they are selling them for $3795 assembled, I think thay can also do a 565 at that price. Was thinking about using Afr 345's or similar Dart Pro 1's. What would you upgrade? Shortblock comes with 4340 scat crank & scat H-beam rods, & mahle pistons. Could upgrade to a Manley rod for 300 or just arp 2000 rod bolts for 100 & hellfires rings for 175. Also callies magnum crank upgrade for 900. Looking to make 750 plus on motor and spray up to 250. Will probably go with a bullet or comp solid roller. Already have a 1050 intake and Prosystems 1050 off my 582. I like the scat stuff better than eagle, i know the callies is even better but not sure if I need it up to 1000 hp. Could put the extra 1000 into shaft rockers or better heads.

Use cam motion for your cam selection. Gas port your pistons.

Ordered it today. Stuck with the scat internals with mahle anodized coated pistons. Just upgraded to hellfire rings and arp 2000 rod bolts. Musi said he's had these upwards of 1400 hp. I'm only looking to spray 250 for now. Then possible step up to a fogger.
Still looking for a head & cam recommendation. Afr said to use the 325 with cnc chamber upgrade. Musi recommended the dart 345 or victor 340's. I think the 325 afr might be a little small. The 335 cnc'd looks pretty good to but not sure if the extra money for them would be worth it. Anyone else running something similar?

What was wrong with the 582? What heads did it have on it?

Had really good results with the Dart cnc 355 on a 496" (which I think is too small for a 355 head) but we changed heads and headers the car picked up something like 5-6 tenths and 10 mph.

I'd stick with the Darts. Very good reputation for makeing HP.

Go to their forum, it's called the Dart Board. Here is the site...

Her is a link to the post about it. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1999&p=16831#p16831 It had canfield 350's untouched on it. Also another post over at the t-chevelle about it, explaining why I'm gettting rid of it whenever I get it back.
