AFR Heads, Are they any good?

#1 Post by CoMax Racing » Fri Jul 04, 2008 1:04 pm

I am replacing my old worn out Dart heads on my bigblock chevy, the AFR heads seem to have all the features I am looking for. I don't have any experience with the AFR stuff. I was hoping to get some feed back (good and bad) about the AFR's from people who have used them.

Thanks
Corey

Harold Sutton (hsutton) a member here has a set of 357's on his son's 598 Schmidt engine - it runs real hard...

You said good and bad. But honestly I haven't ever heard anything bad about them. I don't run them but I would definately consider them if I was looking. Other than the price, I see no negatives.

Biggest issue is getting them setup the way you want in regards to springs, installed heights, etc. do some research here before ordering them. I'd talk to Harold before ordering them first...

40Coupe is running them on his 468. I'm pretty sure he's satisfied, just had to do some pushrod guideplate modifications to get the geometry right.

I looked at the AFR heads when I was in the market. To be honest it came down to the Dart Pro-1's and the AFR's. I even looked at the TFS BB heads. After looking at what kind of heads everybody else is using in the Dallas- Ft. Worth area and the troubles they've had AFR BBC heads. I went the Dart Pro-1's 325 cc Ported for my 525 c.i. BBC.

I did some research and found that AFR was hard to deal with. The people that answer the phones aren't very nice. I also found that if you need any parts from them that it would take weeks or longer to get what you needed. Dart was so much easier to get what you need when you need it. Good people to talk to. Very helpful!

I figured if I was going to spend $3000.00 on a set of heads the seller better have a great product, Nice people, Knowledgeable, and Accommodating.

I don't think thats asking for to much.

Just my 2 cents

Thanks for the info. I have been doing a little more research and have found some other heads that look amazing. I have never heard of these guys but there flow numbers are unbelievable for a conventional port head. Here is the link. Let me know what you guys think about these:

BMF are a side company of CFE, good stuff for someone not wanting to spend for big buck CNC work. Also check out Curtis's stuff, I just sent my SB2.2 castings to him.

Corey you may also want to consider the Pro Filer 24 degree head, I hear that the new CNC version is a really good head and you can get them setup with whatever valvetrain you want - http://www.profilerperformance.com/bbc-heads-174X.html

I'm running a hand ported version of this head and I think they are on par with most of the others out there. Not sure if they as fast as the RFD heads, but we're going to find out pretty darn soon.

I'm getting ready to advertise my 310cc CFE/BMF's for sale. heads with updates by Curtis at RFD, Jesel S/S series shaft rockers, Manton stage 5 7/16" x .120" pushrods, ported Vic jr intake (by RFD), HVH Super Sucker blended to intake, ARP 12 point head bolts, maybe even Bullet roller cam, Crower S/D Hippo lifters, GMPP cast aluminum racing valve covers, and a 1000HP 4150 Pro Systems Holley.

Car weighs 3400 lbs w/driver and has run 9.43 @ 141 with a 1.289 60' footbraking naturally aspirated 13 to 1 compression 461 bbc.

Awesome heads.

Intake flow just shy of 400 cfm, exhaust goes over 300+ cfm.

CoMax, Todd Gieslart's CFEs are a real good set for what you want to do. There is a set of Brodix (332 cc -3 Ovals) for sale over on Racing Junk for $2500 which is an excellent price for a set of state of the art new castings. At 332cc those would probably make the most opower in a moderate size engine.

Just to update this thread. I want to thank everybody for the input, I called Curtis Boggs at AFD and ordered a set of Dart 360 solids this morning. What a great guy to deal with. He he really is willing to work with any budget like his website says. He's going to buid me a set of 360 solid heads fully cnc'd with triple nextech springs, 2.35 titanium intakes, 1.90 Inconel exhausts fully assembled for $5500.00 :thumb: :thumb:

I am very impressed.

Corey
