I've always just dumped mine into the top of the tank. I'm not sure if the pump inlet would a good idea, that very likely would be a low pressure area and draw more fuel than you want out of the bypass.

Good point, just a thought. I have always ran it back to the tank also, just tring to think of a way he wouldn't have to run it back to the tank and still have a bypass.
