electric vacuum pump

#1 Post by Pegasus » Fri Mar 12, 2010 9:12 am

Has anyone had any dealing with a electric vacuum pump ?
When I had the motor in the turbo car built in the winter the rings and all the motor up for a vacuum pump. I had the pump and belt drive set real low but when I installed all the turbo stuff there is no room for the belt drive pump.

From what I've heard Don they can't move much air. Les Pippen used to have two of them on his Camaro when it was a Nitrous car. I don't know if they data logged back then and/or had an idea how well they worked.

Star machine makes one, but it's real pricey and I think it is more suited for motorcycles, I do not think it moves enough air for anything big.
I am not really sure what the question is, but I am pretty sure the answer is Big Block.

Hey Don, Dwight Parker was running an electric pump off of a cadillac on his blown Poncho in his Firebird.

We bought a GM electric for our Top Dragster...I wouldn't waste my money on another one. My shop vac. pulls more vacuum. I'd use it but I don't have a 1/4 mile extension cord!!! Ended up buying one from MOROSO. JMO.

Would one of the ones for brakes work? Like the one SSBC sells?

I know Dwight has issues with a rear main leaking on occasion, when the vacuum pump was working, no more leaks.

A 12Vdc vacuum pump doesn't have near the CFM capacity to evacuate a crankcase - especially if it isn't NA (though it may help keep oil from blowing past the gaskets).

One of the manufacturers promised a high-flow electric model by SEMA last year, but it never materialized - guess it's still vaporware.

It's almost always possible to squeeze a mechanical pump in with a timing belt - though you probably have to fab your own pulleys & brackets (after matching them up with the pump curve on that engine's particular RPM range).
