Balancer vs Hub For a SBC 6-71

#1 Post by prostude » Thu Jun 10, 2010 9:02 am

I will be putting together a 350 with a sbc crank with a bbc hub.
Still leary about putting a second keyway in.
My question is for years I had a sbc 350 stock gm crank with a hub (no balancer).
looking for recomendations on running either a balancer or a Hub before I get the new crank balanced.
BDS says to run a hub.my old motor survived for 20 years with a hub.In that Time I have seen several people have problems with there bolts loosening up or balancer issues on street -strip applications.
any advice or thoughts would be great

the car ran in the 9's in the 60's with an olds motor.

GMC style blower, don't bother with a damper. Just put a hub on it.

Dunno if it's any help to you, but I'm running dual keyways with an ATI hub on a BBC - see pix below - I would suspect your SBC would'nt be all that different, though maybe I don't understand the question - hub vs balancer...

When running a GMC style blower there is no need to have a damper.
A drive hub, pulley and the belt will absorb most if no all the harmonic.
Something like this is all you need.

and maybe one of these...

I have no problem going either way on the hub/balancer issue. Most of the time though we have to go with the hub...and no alarming issues in decades.

These guys have everything. http://www.rcdengineering.com

Oh, and btw, definitely do the second key way AND get the front crank support if you plan on more than 10 lbs of boost. The BB snout is a good thing but...................

this motor survived about 20 years with a hub
BDS recomended a hub and so did Bryant to keep as much weight off of the front.
so with your advice and theirs looks like I will stick with the hub setup and order a hub that will fit the bbc snout

thanks

I should have mentioned that when using a balancer I only use ATI.
