WARNING STP OIL FILTERS

#1 Post by John_Heard » Mon May 29, 2006 11:09 pm

Just a heads up, my brother in law had an STP filter collapse this weekend in his dirt track car causing it to lose all oil pressure. Appears Fram isn't the only one that has this problem.

I use a AC Delco and so far so good. What is the most recommended filter for racing?

AC Delco's used to be real good. They changed suppliers a couple years ago, now I don't know. I've had no problems with WIX or K&N Race filters.

Oil Filters

I ended up switching to a Canton Manufacturing aluminum body filter, the price is a little higher to start but the replacment elements are less than a regular racing spin on filter. There is no way one of these will ever implode.

The AC filter is differnt all together now in the Pf1218 shorter and inverted inside kind of cheap looking now.I still have a stash of black AC Racing filters but when they are gone I think I will go to WIX I think.I just know some circle track guys that run the Wix. They thrash things hard and never have trouble even running them with dry sumps and thats said to be a no no.

I also had a K&N race oil filter collapse on a bbc. Ruined a final round race with an early shut-off. Now I use only AC Delco also.

Dang, I've got a K & N on the car right now. This is the first I've heard of one of those collapsing. Guess I'll go back to the Wix...I need to change the oil anyway, I think I'll cut it apart and a wix and get some pictures see what's inside of them.

In Summary... So far I've heard of the following brands collapsing on a race car:

FRAM (regular filter, not race)
STP
K & N Race

Are there any others out there? I'd bet Fram makes a lot of different brands under different labels.

NAPA has really good quality filters. I think they are made by Wix.
1974 Chevrolet Vega - 439 C.I. big block, TCI powerglide, 9 inch rear. 10.44 and still testing and tuning.

Oil Filters

Hey Guys , I'm not doing an advertisement for NAPA, Buuuuutttt, Napa Filters are as good as they come , They are made by Wix, or GARD CORP. I have been selling and using these filters on my race cars for years , Working at a Napa jobber for 10 years , ,I have toured the factory more than once, There is No Difference in the Wix & the Napa filter , they come down the same conveyor, only the paint and labeling equipment changes , on the line, for a different jobber order, Cut open a Napa filter, and a fram or other competitor, and the Quality difference is evident , they have served me well, i wont use anything else. ........................

Here is a lengthy and informative comparison.
