SBC Heads

This winter, I'm hoping to turn up the wick on my engine package. I need better heads than the Brodix 18X that I have now. They've been a great head but my competition is using better stuff and I need to keep up.

I've through hard about SB2.2 and just don't know that the money will be there for that kind of setup. Very expensive, especially since I can't just throw some used Cup stuff on there and make it live on nitrous.

So I've looked some at CFE's 15 degree wedge head. If I go that route, I can probably pick up a good bit of power and not break the bank.

But is there another head out there that I should be considering instead? I don't know much about the Edelbrock GB2000/2300 stuff. I need to find out more about them and who is good at porting them.

So what would you guys use to build a competitive TT5 small block nitrous motor?

The SB2.2 heads require a specific block. I'm not sure if you have looked into that. I seems like the RFD 15*s or the RFD 18*are a killer head http://www.raceflowdevelopment.com/RFD- ... onster.htm.

There are a lot of fast guys running the CFE heads as well, but $$$$$.

Not at all. You can use the same lifters an 18˚ engine uses, a single offset. The 447 we put together 3 years ago now in my brothers car has a standard inline lifter setup. It does require different pistons and a different cam as the intake and exhaust swap places on all 4 corners. My 461 SB2 does have the SB2 offset and is preferable, just not a requirement. However the combustion chambers on the SB2 need to be worked over if you plan to use a significant amount of NOS. I do suggest since you already have an 18˚ head, call Curtis at RFD and get him to work up a set of 18˚ or 15˚ for you.

I talked to Curtis last winter actually and was leaning toward his Monster 15 degree heads at that time. Then I got to thinking SB2 again this summer and forgot I had talked with him. LOL

As I recall, he thought I could probably just fly cut my pistons for the 15 degree angle and not have to do more than freshen the bottom end. That would be great since the crank and rods have less than a season on them.

Hopefully the guy that's going to buy my 18 degree top end will come through and I can get down to business in November.

Definitely can't swing little chiefs. No cubic dollars available. :shock:

Craig, talk to the piston manufacturer of your choice before making a final decision on heads. The shallower the valve angle, the further the valve relief is pushed to the edge of the piston. I like the suggestion of using another 18 degree head. Valve angles have some bearing on flow but, the port location has more. A great set of 18 high ports would flow all you want and leave plenty of piston face for strength under the big tune ups.

No weight break for running stock angle heads.
