I agree, the only real way to check bearings is an inside mic, and hey as long as you trust the guy, and it works, there is nothing wrong with monkey see monkey do.wikd69 wrote:I no longer have any decent inside or outside micrometers and didn't want to spend the money (~$300) to get a new set, just for this engine build. Yeah, I go to Rex Hutchison Racing, here in Sacramento. They build everything from top fuel to sprint car motors to blown alcohol to big allison stuff for race boats and aircraft (Reno Air Race) motors. Rex is a hell of great guy and has been around forever. They do my heads, line bore, automotive machine stuff I'm not set up to do (like I have a lot of that going on lol).Moparious Maximus wrote:I agree, the only real way to check bearings is an inside mic, and hey as long as you trust the guy, and it works, there is nothing wrong with monkey see monkey do.wikd69 wrote:I no longer have any decent inside or outside micrometers and didn't want to spend the money (~$300) to get a new set, just for this engine build. Ok, block and crank is down at Hutchisons and the water pump is at the local machine shop.
Gonna have Rex's guys stuff new cam bearings in the block and polish & bed the crank. They'll get everything back to me mid-week and I can start the motor build.
I'm having the machine shop mill 1/4" off the back of the water pump where it mates to the block. - this will make up for the 1/4" motor plate and will save me from having to revamp where everything runs on the front of the motor. Other than a bit of tweaking on the alternator bracket, this should make the addition of this motor plate a done deal.
Also, I got a little bit of fab done this weekend - the front bars are not completely finished, but I'm pretty close.

Didn't have much time in the shop tonite - bars are in place, though I still have to finish welding them in. Wanted to see what it looked like with the motor plate installed.
Tomorrow nite I'll finish welding the bars and can start on paint up front. After that, motor work. Woo hoo !!
It's getting there :)

Re: Major changes, new parts, more grunt, yee haw ! :)
Finally got around to the water pump...
Adding the front motor plate meant I needed to change my crank pulleys and alternator alignment, etc., cuz the water pump was gonna sit 1/4" further forward. After looking at the problem for a bit, I decided the most straightforward way to solve the problem was to shorten the water pump by a 1/4".
Here's a shot of getting the pump setup in the Bridgeport...
And heres another where we're hitting it with the carbide cutter and removing material...

Re: Major changes, new parts, more grunt, yee haw ! :)
Yippie !!!!!! I finally finished the front bars and got my tie-down loops done on the front clip.
I came up with several variations on the tie-down brackets, etc. After showing some of them to Rob the other nite, we had a 'heavy metal intervention', where Rob told me there was no way he was gonna let me put those other solutions on the Camaro. On his Jeep or on my diesel pickup, yes, but not on the Camaro
I do have to admit, I have a tendency to over-engineer stuff
Anyway, got the front bars done and bolted in, along with the tie-down loops. I'm going to wait to powder-coat this stuff - I don't know yet what colors I'm going to go with down the road. If I need to, I can primer them for now. I'm pretty happy with the way this stuff turned out.
I was able to remount and tweak my fuel line stuff without having to change too much:
Heres the other side...
And here's the tie-down loop solution I finally came up with - 1/8" plate with 3/8" round stock. Not too heavy duty.

Re: Major changes, new parts, more grunt, yee haw ! :)
Ok, finally some progress to report:
Spent part of a day working on wiring - the new MSD Distributor is wired differently than the Mallory Unilite. I also relocated my MSD Digital6 box so that it was easier to get to. I had to practically stand on my head to get to it before - it's now installed in the glove box and is much easier to get to. I still have to tidy things back up under the dash, but I got the ugly stuff done now. One of my future projects is a new wiring harness for everything.
Over this last week I got the crank polished, bedded and torqued - it's ready to rock-n-roll and today I got the pistons & rods cleaned up and ready to install. Tomorrow I'll stuff them in the block, install the cam, timing set, etc.
Got the last parts ordered today for the heads. After pulling them apart I found I needed new locks & retainers. I went with the K-Motion titanium retainers and tool steel locks - those should be stout enough for what I'm doing.
Rob and I were discussing the best way to target spring pressure, either seat or open, in setting the installed spring height. I'm still not sure which way to go in setting these heads up. I ordered a CompCams mini-spring checker - it'll let me test each of these K-Motion springs and set the right install height, after I figure out what to shoot at.
As soon as I get the heads sorted out, I can hang them on the block to determine my pushrod length and get them ordered. Still a fair bit of chicken-egg stuff going on here.

Re: Major changes, new parts, more grunt, yee haw ! :)
Progress for today:
Started here...
Got to here with the rods & pistons...
And then tackled the cam...
(can you spot the slot car in the pix ?)
Setting cam end play...
And I finally got to here...
I still have to finish degreeing in the cam, but my short-block is basically done. Still a lot to do, but I was pretty happy with what I got done today. I should have my new locks & retainers in a day or so and I can finish the heads. I'm a happy guy at this point - this feels like real progress
