Major changes, new parts, more grunt, yee haw ! :)

#1 Post by wikd69 » Wed Sep 01, 2010 1:05 am

I have some major changes underway. I should be making a bunch more HP & TQ - dunno what it'll do to my times but I should see a major improvement.

Engine:

- going from 9% under to 1-to-1 on the blower - increase from 8 to about 10 lbs of boost

- swapping the old 990 cast iron heads for a set of Dart aluminum Pro-1 310's

- swapping the old Comp .612 lift hydraulic roller for a Crane .714 solid roller

- swapping the Pete Jackson gear drive for a Cloyes double roller set

- swapping the Mallory Unilite for an MSD Pro-Billet distributor

- adopting Taylor wires, replacing the old MSD set

- installing an S&W front motor plate

Rearend:

- swapping the old ladder bars for a set of Morrison adjustable bars

- adding lots of new gusseting & braces to the 12-bolt bar mounts

- swapping the unpredictable detroit locker for a Moser spool

I finally decided these old 990's were really gonna compromise any gains made with the new cam so I decided it was time to swap the old heads out. I went with the 310 runners which should help me on the street - remember, this thing is primarily a street car - and would still flow enough volume to let me take advantage of more boost on the track. I'm not sure what this will do to my ET but it could easily drop me in to the 9's. We'll see - if thats the case and I can't keep the times above 10.0, it'll mean yet more changes to the ride. Thats not a problem, it just means more planning and shop work.

Another major decision point was the cost of upgrading the 990's to handle the new cam. This Crane grind has a pretty agressive profile and I needed to signifcantly increase spring pressures to handle it. That meant spending a big chunk of money to swap out springs, retainers, locks, etc. on the 990's, while still living with the small flow numbers in the end. I did the math and determined that picking up these Darts was a much better investment than throwing money at these OEM cast iron heads. I'll do a quick valve job on these 990's and put them on the market - that'll help offset the cost of the new heads. Stay tuned :)

I like your setup so much that i just picked up a Tall deck 427 with a steel crank.

And yes it will be a blown, injected alcohol deal, and hmmm i dont have any heads yet

I have not played with a BBC in 25 years, so i have lots of parts to find on a budget. My limit will about 800hp because the 4 speed jerico will not be happy after that they say? And that will be easy to make.

So if anyone has any used BBC parts for sale ( oil pan, rocker arms, pushrods, valve covers, maybe open chamber oval port heads, headers and more?)

I cant wait to see the increase in MPH and the decrease in Et on your car!

Wow, cool beans !!!!

Sounds like a killer build, blown with alcohol... It won't be hard to make that 800 hp. One suggestion tho, is to go with the bigger rectangular port heads instead of the ovals - blower motors live and die in their ability to move air - I don' think the ovals are a benefit with this sort of combination. I'm not the worlds expert on this but I'm thinking that big rectangular port heads would be a better bet with the blower.

I agree the square ports are a much better way to go...its just the cost.

I have heard of a few people using oval ports with a square port manifold and still having the results i am looking for.

Now in the long run as money comes in... i will put good heads on it later, much later... like when i have a lenco in it. I should be able to use the power then...i hope.

So how long till we get to see your results?

I wish I *owned* a bank !!! Mostly I buy and sell parts & pieces to help offset costs - I wish I had this much disposable income, that'd be nice.

Here's a shot on the engine - I have yet to pull the heads, cam and timing set (gear drive, etc.), waiting for the Darts to show via UPS. I'll wait to finally mount the motor plate once the new cam is in and heads are on. You can see in the second shot the progress I've made on the rear end. I'm about to add the gussets and crossbars on the 12 bolt ladder bar brackets - it's pretty limber and I need to stiffen it all up. After that I'll take the diff down to the gear shop so they can stuff the new spool in it, prolly next week.

And Jim, you got some big changes planed too. I'd also be worried about the Jerico behind a blown BB on alky

lol ya to say the least Bill, a lenco will come right after the BBC is running.

But first goal is to run 9.30's with the current SBC... i finally put a better clutch in it as well as a vacuum pump, that should get me close.
