#1 Post by 434 nova » Mon Sep 27, 2010 5:55 pm

I am looing for a electric fan for my street car its a 434 sbc with about 650 hp 11.1 compression, afr 235 264-272 678 658 109. I ahve a csr electric water pump aluminum radiator 31x19 and now need a fan what can you guys recommend me. I seen the blac mgic fans but they are 300 a piece and that is steep but if i have no choice i will spend the money. Also should i run a thermostat? Thanks

I ran a big single fan from a 90s Chrysler FWD for years and it did a great job. It was about 16" with a built-in shroud and curved blades. Might have been from a Dodge Shadow.

I now have an Ebay cheapie 12". Seems to work pretty well so far. Moves a lot of air for a small fan. A big version of it might work OK on a street car.

The "extreme" black magic fan will cool your engine very well. Run a 160 thermostat and set the fan to come on about 180. After trying many fans this was the only one that realy worked. I also would run a high flow thermostat and drill a small hole to bleed air, while filling the radiator. The above will work well too, if you have the time to find what will fit your requirements. I would not run anything but a SPAL fan
Probably the 16" single that they use in nascar qualifying cool downs

I have been running a dual 11" setup (may be dual 12")
These fans are way better than anything I have ever seen.
I have suggested them to people over and over and never had heard a single complaint.
They are a little noisier than other brands but they work
dont be fooled by cfm ratings most companies rate theres at 14 plus volts spals I believe are still tested at 12 volts.

I went from overheating with a blown street/strip motor to running no more than 180 degrees when I took off my black magic and installed the SPAL
You have to run a good relay such as a spal (i believe 40 amp relay)

Redline water wetter works wonders to
I have helped setup some cars where the tstat turns the fan on and off but I always ran my manually
Street car Old motor 10.80 @122 1.49 60' 355 6-71 stock gm heads stock rocker arms block hugger headers 1-5/8"x2.5" collector
the car ran in the 9's in the 60's with an olds motor.

I keep seeing everyone mention SPAL fans.

What part numbers are you guys using and how to do read their spec sheets?

Are these numbers in metric?

Thanks

Bruce
Those who think they know it all have no way of finding out they don't.........

All the sizes are in mm, just divide by 25.4. Some of their fans draw huge amps and require special wiring dont forget to look at that also.

Huge amps indeed, if memory serves mine will pop a 25 amp fuse.

If it's something that you can use, I've got a new, in the box, Jeg's 16' fan that I don't plan on using. Maybe $15 off their price?

Email me at lizardofoz@att.net if you're interested.

Spal fan are the best. They blow enough air to make it nearly painful to to in the path of the air.
A shroud and a couple of fan that best cover the area is the way to go. Any uncover area should have high pressure by pass flaps installed.

I found that the double fan/shroud setup out of a 95 transam fits just about perfect in my 74 nova. Had to make a few small mods to install. I paid 50 bucks for it at a junk yard. Another nice thing about the setup is you can get the replacement fan motors from autozone for about $25. I have a 650hp 406 in my nova and it cools coming down the return road. I can sit there and let it idle and it will never get over 170. If you have ever seen the nose of a 95 transam, you can see there is not much air flow through there. I believe they also pull less then 20 amps. if you are interested, I can post some pics.

Let me know.

Thanks
