street BBC solid roller

#1 Post by dragracer5372 » Thu Jan 20, 2011 11:03 am

i've have a chance at buying a Lunati solid roller that i was told is streetable and am wondering what i can expect for idle characteristics and/or performance in a 12:1 BBC 427. it is in a '69 Nova SS 4 speed car with power disc brakes and cam specs are the following;

adv duration; 287-Int / 292-Exh
duration @ .050; 251-Int / 255-Exh
lift; .630-Int / .630-Exh
lobe seperation; 108-Int / 112+4-Exh

Thanks in advance!

Looks fine to me, its a little smaller than a cam I had in a 454 with an auto ran it on the street for years no issues. Its not going to idle like the new Ford Fusion though

Years ago we built a 10:1 427 BBC street motor, solid roller cam, it was 244* .600, 244* .600, it was definently NOT over cammed, very mild mannered on the street, it was in a 4 speed Vette.

Ended up being to much motor for the car, damn thing kept breaking things.

I dont think that cam is even near too big for the street.

Mine is a 427 BBC and I ran a CompCams hyd roller - .612 lift - 252 @ .050 duration - I ran this one a long time on the street and it was great.

I'm stepping up now to a Crane solid roller - .714 lift - 264 @ .050 - I'll be running this one on the street as well, and don't expect to have a lot of trouble with it.

Of course, I do have the huffer and that takes some of the ugly out...

i was just concerned with vacuum for the power disc brakes and what idle characteristics it will have......kinda hoping for somewhat decent vacuum yet still have a nice lope or racy idle......any ideas on either?

IMO it's better to under cam a motor than it is to over cam a motor. I think it's a good cam for your motor.

I'd run that on the street with no worries. We run a 600" bbc on the street with over .800 lift and never have any problems.

It will have the idle you want but the brakes may suffer a little bit.

I don't remember the specifics, but another friend of mine had the same worries (lack of vacuum for brakes) - he was considering using an OEM electric vacuum pump - you can find them on a lot of original vehicles at your local pick-n-pull - cadiallac, audi, etc. - do a search on Yellow Bullet for 'electric vacuum pump'...

Thats a very streetable cam. I run a .660 lift and 259in and 270ex duration at .50 on the street quit a bit.

don't get me wrong--i LIKE overkill to a point too (on some things :D ) i am just wanting i think the best of both worlds.....something that will sound pretty healthy and still have "some" type of brakes too.....that, and i can get this one on a "trade-type" deal and it's brand new too. and he is telling me it will have a pretty healthy idle quality too it and still be able to maintain decent brake pedal so i was just looking for other opinions instead of basing it on the guy that's trying to trade with me....i would just hate to put it in and it's sounds wimpy and/or little or no brake pedal, but i figured i could run a vacuum canister at minimum or put a small electric vacuum pump on it too!
