Head nut and washer for AFR 227's...Between center 2 springs

#1 Post by 10scnd70 » Sat Jun 11, 2011 4:16 pm

I'm pulling my hair out here. I'm trying to bolt these AFR 227's on. I have absolutely no clearance between the 2 center springs for a washer or nut. I'm trying to use ARP 234-4301 stud kit with 12PT. nuts, which is what AFR recommends. Even after pulling the springs, I have no room for a washer, between the spring seats, or the large end of the nut. Obviously, I'm not the first to run into this, so what's the trick?

I had wondered about that, but I'm using the ARP number on AFR's web page for the 227's. I'm hoping I don't have to buy a whole new set of head studs, just for 2 studs.

call arp and tell them what you need and they will sell you what you need they are cool people to deal with that way you don't need to buy a whole set afr customer service leaves little to be desired ever sense the dad passed and guy trip left i'm not to impressed with them and there service. well thats another story like i said call arp they will hook you up. if i was going to be going over to arp i would pick them up for you and save you a few bucks but i won't be going by there for a week or 2

Nut is a 7/16 fine thread, uses a 1/2" 12 point socket. On my 11X heads I had to grind the washer to fit between the springs.

Talked to both AFR and ARP today. These nuts are sold as singles, and cost under $2 a piece. The base is only .700" in diameter, and they use a 1/2" 12 pt. socket, instead of a 9/16". They fit a standard 7/16" stud. The part number is ARP 300-8303. Both told me to grind the washer, not the spring locator...

The cutout washers in the picture on YB is exactly what I did to mine.
