best heads

I was wanting to know what would be the best head to run on a 540 bbc? I would like to make a 1000 or more hp. It got to be a done with a single carb tho. The brodix head hunters look to be the best on the market but i was wanting to hear someone else's opinion on this subject. Thank you.

It really is a matter of opinion! You are talking about a conventional heads right? I like the the Dart heads myself. Your not going to make that kind of power with just buying heads. It's going to take head work also, and lots of it. My heads started out as Dart Pro-1, 325 cc, 2.250 intake valves. Now, around 385 cc with 2.350 intake valves and flow 440 cfm at .800 lift. I have them on a 572 ci motor that is a nitrous motor and probibly doesn't make a 1000 HP n/a. Well maybe right at it with the new 1200 cfm carb. :mrgreen:

What ever head you get your hands on it will take head work to get you in the ball park of what your shooting for.

My heads are CFM Performance peaces and work very well. Mike Stark can help you out with head work when your ready. Give him a call...

Thank you. Yes it has to be a coventional head. I no its prob going to be hard to get a 1000 hp from that just trying to see what would be the best route to go. If i can by an out of the box head thats going to work as good or better than a worked head i think that would be the better way to go. do you thing the brodix h h is to big for a 540 say 15 or 16 to 1?

A talented porter will be able to improve on any out of the box head, no matter how good the ports are in stock form. For a 1000 hp 540 and an out of the box heads will take some serious research, and dyno time. Buuuuuuut, it will be a friggin killer build! Keep us posted on what you decide to do :mrgreen:

Yes, I do think the head hunter is too big for a 540. I have the HH377MC's on a 15.5 to 1 compression 582 bbc. Peak power is at 7500, peak torque between 6000-6500 rpm. Heads are box stock BTW.

I can't say I've heard of too many 540's making 1000+ hp N/A witha conventional head. My 582 makes 1056hp/811 ft/lbs.

The Head Hunter is an awesome head, but you need more shortblock under it IMO.

If your stuck on your 540, I'd put a Dart 355CNC on it MAX, maybe a 345 Dart. Otherwise I'd build a 582 to run the Head Hunters if you wanna reach your power goal.

I agree with DOTracer, the HH's are way too much head for a 540. 345's would be a better choice.
My 325 heads un-touched on the first motor (525 ci) worked ok but worked much better after the first port work was done on same motor. After worked they were around 350 cc's. Now around 385 cc's but bigger motor AND more nitrous..

I need to stay with a 540 cause there is a class around here i want to run. 540 coventional head single carb no nitrous or alky.

Max rpm will also play into head selection. The larger the head, the higher your gonna have to spin it. I shift my HH582 at 8000-8200 rpm and run it the same at the stripe. A 540 with too large of a head will need even more rpm. Bottom end needs to be built with this in mind.

Unconventional = Spreadport heads. Otherwise, they won't bolt up to a OEM style intake.
