SPAL fan users

#1 Post by Bruce69Camaro » Mon Jun 27, 2011 5:48 am

I plan to buy a SPAL 16" fan soon. The one I was looking at is a puller fan and is around 3200cfm.

Two questions, I noticed that the mounting hardware is not included.

What are you guys using to mount them?

Second, is 3200cfm over-kill and could I go smaller?

Thanks

No such thing as over kill when it comes to cooling a big block. I have 2 spal fans the pull 3800 cfm's. Each fan has it's own switch so I don't have to have both fans on at the same time.
The fans are mounted on a shroud that is made out of aluminum that came with the radiator. Look up Universal Parts Inc. They have some great stuff at good prices. That's were mine came from.

i agree, there is no such thing as in Overkill. Here is a picture of the fan that I bought. Works geat. I think the hottes that my motor has gotten up too was 230 on an 100 degree temp day and I didnt turn the pump or fan on right away.

I'll stay with the 16" fan w/ 3200cfm's, I'm getting a very good deal on it.

I know SPAL has a bunch of different mounting feet for this fan, I'm just not sure which one to use or if a universal type will work?

I'll check out that site.

Thanks, sorry to be so professional today, I'm in the middle of testing so I'm in a professional mood.

Later guys....

Of coarse the heat here in Texas is different than where your at Bruce. When you get up out of bed in the morning and temp outside is still in the 90's at 6:00 am, what do you think it will be at 3:00 pm???? 100 +. Track temps this time of year are as high as 150's, I'v even seen 160.......
So cooling is very important here in Texas.

I thought humidity would be more important to you the track temp?

I know how important it is for you to have that perfect hair condition and no frizzies, after you remove you helmet... :nutkick:

Oh yeah, testing is over for today....now I can be myself again!

That would make good for traction!

More importantly than CFM, how much does it weigh?

I truely think someone at SPAL screwed up, because in their literature it states weight, 2,570 Kg and if you convert that to pounds, it's 5665.89 lbs......that's a bit nose heavy if you ask me

Gee maybe I could ask them to make it out of carbon fiber to lessen the weight?

Bruce, looks like you might need those heavier springs up front after all :smt003

ya...they probably meant 2.5XX kg

I love my spal fan. I also went with the 3200 cfm. I have a stock 4 core radiator. Last test n tune I lapped it 6 times back to back without stopping. I just flipped the fan on at the end of the run, it was back to 180 in the lanes and down to 165 in the burnout box...never shutting it off. Had to stop lapping due to the tranny temp :?

There's a kit you get for them that are basically little legs that go on the fan. From there I just used the cheesy 'through the radiator' ties to do mine.

And make no mistake, you will know when it's on 8-)

I hosed up my last radiator using the 'through the radiator' mounts - ended up wearing a hole through the aluminum tubing which I couldn't patch. Had to pick up a new radiator.

I won't ever use that method again for hanging fans, etc.

hey bruce do your self a favor and build a aluminum shroud for the fan make the shroud 3/4 depth and it will make a hugh difference. i did a bunch of testing with the shrouds and 3/4 was the magic number it suck air from the whole core. if you need more info on this let me know haven't found a car that i couldn't make run cool yet<< lol after a full run and pulling back to my pit in 110 degree weather mine only gets up to 180 and that is starting the run at 170

Hmm...I better check mine. Seems to me you probably drive yours alot more than I drive mine though.

I talked to SPAL and they flat out told me NOT to run the push pins through the radiator because the 16" fan I'm getting was too heavy and they recommend using their universal mounting kit.

Speaking of this kit, here is a link to the kit:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Spal-301 ... 0464969571

Do you think I can bend the bracket over the lip on the top and bottom of the radiator and lock it into place, by drilling a small hole and use a #8 machine screw?

As Rob mentioned, I thought about a shroud but my problem is, with the 3.5" fan depth and 3/4" shroud, I'm going to be very close to hitting the front of my water pump. I'm going to try it without a shroud first and then if I have issues, I'm going to have to figure something out. So Rob, stay close in case I need some help :thumb:

Do you guys just use a toggle switch or do you use a sensor?

Thanks
