Alcohol & turbo

#1 Post by 72Torino460 » Wed Nov 30, 2011 9:44 pm

I'm building a 460cid bbf for my 1972 ford torino. I used to drive this car to high school but it has sat for quite some time but I'm changing that real soon. I've been doing a lot of research and thinking about where I want my car to end up before I spend too much money in the wrong direction. a couple of the ideas that I've really been turning over are running one or maybe even two turbos, and the other is block filling and converting it from pump gas to alcohol. is there anyone out there running these applications or have tried them and can give me some guidance?

I wouldn't recommend using the filled block and methanol if you plan on driving this thing on the street. With the turbos you can use some mild cam timing and have a nice idle, nice driving car while maintaining good hp. If you are running pump gas you are going to have to be careful with the compression ratio. You can always use methanol or methanol/water injection to help keep you out of detonation. What are you plans for the fuel delivery side of the project? Blow through carb, EFI?

Hands down I've decided that this car will no longer be a street car. I'm already organizing a full back half tub for it with a four link suspension kit and I'm already buying the moly piping to weld up a minimum of a 12 point cage. I've been talking to a couple guys that run big turbos on bbf's and I'm really leaning that way. And I'm probably going to stock with pump gas because alchy is way more expensive. As fuel delivery goes I'm looking into a Holly 1050 dominator with an electric fuel pump. Do you know of anyone running turbos with/without nitrous on bbf?

You might consider E85 and enjoy the reasonable prices, the cooling effect and good octane.

I've heard from some guys around the track that have used high ethanol fuels that say the ethanol is ruining their carbs and fuel pumps, is there anything special about e85 or is all high ethanol based fuel safe?

The ethanol draws a moisture, don't leave gasoline on long in a tank.

Friend of mine ran E-85 blow through in his Turbo car and it worked very well.

One of our members is doing this on his Camaro and setting it all up right now.

Yes 85 perfectly works.
But it is not necessary to forget, and Hygroscopy at storage in a tank.

For an example in Russia the gallon of ethanol of 100 % costs 13.5$ it at the local dealer. The ofitsalnyj dealer sells on 17.5$
We very seriously concern it.

I had a turbo alcohol car, and it was EFI not carbed...it worked great.

You just need a secong program for pump gas. At the end of the day you dump the alcohol and put in 2 gallons of pump gas change to the pump gas program, start the car for a couple of mins and let it idle...that way it willl purge the Methanol out of the system. Never had any fuel system issues with the methanol other than tough to start on cold days.
