If I know him, it was being machined to be made into a 496.

Step 1- Almost complete......
Bruce,... I have a 4 bolt that was a 496 already that I am looking to get rid of. PM me for details and information if interested at all. This is a K block.

I do know for a fact that you can go deep into the 8's with a 496, double cross plate, flat top pistons, low buck short deck two bolt main motor and it's likely it'll live for at least several years if all goes well. Adam Wright's car is a perfect example, and it weighs 600 lbs more.

No doubt an aftermarket block, 4 bolt mains, etc. etc. etc. will increase lifespan, and maybe make a little more power, but it can be done on a budget if that's what you need to do. Just remember there is no replacement for displacement :thumb:
I have to agree with John totaly. You can use a 2 bolt block and live to tell about it. :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

All this being said, however, 'There's no replacement for overkill' :thumb:

As far as the 4 bolt 2 bolt thing goes, my builder has a 496 in a dragster running 7.70's. Now that is a 1800 pound car, so you can bet the loading on the crank is different. And dont bother with the 468 unless you already have a really good 4.00 inch stroke crank. Nothing wrong with them, but they cost the same to build, and there is no point of going smaller, only to want to grow later. Now that said, I went overboard on my 496 pretty bad. And I could have built a 540 or 555 for what I have in this little bigblock. boo I wont make that mistake again, I can promise you that.

So with my "think outside the box" 496, I kept worrying that it would be to underpowered to get my 3500 pound vette into the 10.00 range. So I have taken somewhere between 500-700 pounds out of it, and probably added close to 50 horse power. Then I bought nitrous. So what ever you decide, make sure its gonna be enough to keep you happy. If you do what I did, you will double your predicted budget, and time frame.

X 3! 2 bolt will get the job done. My 505 short block short deck has been together 4 years, freshened & inspected 2 times.Bearings & caps always looked perfect. 3400 #'s many n/a 1/8th passes 6.15 -6.30 et & 40-60 n2o passes.

Ok, I do have a question, I know there is a difference between Nodular Iron and Forged, but whats the difference between the 4340 and 5140 forgings? I like the 496 kit with the 5140 crank, how much power can that handle vs the 4340 package?
I can't wait for race season, this has got to be the year.
