Air Pan

I know this subject has been discussed before and I was wondering if this idea would be worth the effort?

I'm using a 5" fiberglass cowl hood and if I would close off the raised area of the hood with a flat piece of aluminum and cut a 14" opening in that panel, for my air filter to fit into, would that help?

It's basically like a factory cowl induction setup except that I would not be sealing the air cleaner to the hood.

I am using a 5" air filter which would stick through the partition, approximatley 3" or more.

I know to be sure, I'd have to do some testing, but is this idea worth the effort?

I thought about an air pan but I'm not thrilled about not running an air filter.

Maybe it might get some cooler air to the carb. Do you have inner fender panels?

Your so lucky I already sold my scoop, or I would sneak in your shop and glue it on your hood whilst you slept.

I don't think I have enough ceiling height for that thing and my hood.

I'd have to get out my 10' extension ladder and fully extend it to just remove the scoop plug.... :smt005 :smt005

I put an air pan on mine for air temp consistency. I figured if it was pulling air from outside it would be more accurate in my logs than if it was getting air willy nilly that may or may not have been influenced by engine, radiator or header heat.

Anyways that's how I justify mine.

Hey guys,

I tried my skills at making a air pan for the car, what do you think?

Here is the bottom plate:

Here it is with the filter in place:

And here it is with the sides trimmed and needing to have the pop rivets installed:

I need to order some molding yet, to seal between the sides and the hood and then I plan to block off the vents in my cowl panel to help direct the air into the back of the cowl.

It turned out ok for my first attempt and if it doesn't work, hey, it was fun making it and best thing is, it was free, except for the molding.

Think it might work?

Looks good, I think It'll be a good source of cool air, but you'll not likely see anything pressurized from the cowl.

I have been talking to Bert Heck from K&N filters and he said that for something like this to work, I would need to put inner fenders in, but they are long gone, so I'm going to try and see if this helps at all.
Like I said, it was free and fun to make, so if it helps, good, if not, no big deal.

No offense to the K & N guy, but I'd like to see his data that backs that statement up. How would inner fenders have any affect if the carb is sealed to the hood?

Here is what he said:
Everyone removes the inner fenders for weight but it really hurts the aero of the car, If you could I would make some aluminum panels that go from your fender to the strut tubes you have. People don’t think about all of the dirty air the wheels make. And if you can close off the front grill that would be a huge help, just depends on if you drive the car..

I thought the comment was in regard to how the Air Pan would work, not Aero of the car. There's a lot of differences here to discuss such as with or without the front grill blocked, front air dam or not, how high the car sits, etc.
