head studs

#1 Post by PANDER » Mon Mar 09, 2015 9:23 pm

im looking to get some insight on head studs for my 468 chevy big block, iv always used head bolts but just wondering if there is any advantage as to using head studs vs head bolts, it will be drag race only with aluminum heads, any info from y'all that have experienced using both and what worked better for the engine would be greatly appreciated thank you.

Studs overall are a better fastener, offer better clamping, and protect the deck threads in the block. However, if you are not pulling the heads a lot or if it is in a full body car, studs in my opinion are a headache. I still use ARPhead bolts on my 540 with no issues. Try pulling the head off a car hanging over the fender while trying to guide it over studs and you'll understand why.
