Building a 327

#1 Post by NOVASS » Fri Jul 29, 2005 7:52 am

Hey guys I'm the new guy here so let me start off by saying hello to everyone. Here is my question and sorry if there is a post already covering this. I bought a chevy 327 from a guy last week that needs rebuilding badly but that is what I wanted, so here it is I don't really want a drag racing motor but I would like something that if I want some speed its there. I have been told thru other sources that the heads are the mild ones(210hp) the cam that came with it was told to be a mild cam I have the spces on it at home if anyone could tell me what they mean let me know and I will put the specs in later. other than that I don't have everything for the motor(rockers, pushrods, pistonrings, and so on) if anyone could help me with information on building a firebreathing small block I would be greatful. One last thing This is my first motor rebuild so go easy on me.

Thanks
Mark

one of the first things that a lot of people try to do.....is make a lot of insane horsepower on an initial build. a good rule of thumb is to do your first build on the conservative side.......try and build a motor for lots of torque .....the horsepower thing will come into play later. the other reason for this, you state that this is your first build, and to be realistic, mistakes are going to be made, and its better to get this experience by not destroying expensive after market parts. we all have done it, we just don't like to admit it. :D

the 274 series is too much for what you want....stick to a stock 327 cam..you will be real happy with the torque

That would be great but I don't have the stocker because the guy that I bought it from only had the 247 that I have. So I guess I forgot to mention that I know people that know what they are doing so I shouldn't have any problems putting it back together. You say that is too much what do you mean by that. don't mean to be snody about it but just wondering.

Thanks again

that profile for the 274 series is 2600 rpm to 5600 rpm, which is more of a mid range cam.this cam would need a torque convertor and some decent gears.for what you are doing, a stock 327 cam is perfect.

i would have to agree with sixty-foot on the not going huge on the first motor. i my self had just bought a 327 block crank n rods i havent got a round to start building it yet tho. i am running a strong 305 in my malibu. the same package i have in the mali would work sweet on at 327. i am using "power pack" heads there a stock head just under the double humps. everybody under rates them because of the small intake valve i think its 1.70" or something like that but it can be punched out to a 1.94". the heads are small combustion chamber (52cc) so u might have to be carefull with compression. i did some research before i bought my block and with those heads and a flat top piston i am lookin at aronnd 10-10.5:1 compression which is a lot but doable for the street, u just have to run a 92+ octane fuel. i am also using basicly a 300hp 327cid cam but if u r looking for a little more power go with a 350hp 327cid cam (if u want specs i can get them for u). go with a aftermarket intake. something respectable like a edlebrock (im running the RPM performer) or wilend something along those lines. sry this might be a little late i just found out about dragstuff.com but i hope this kind of helps u out. depending on where u live (if u are in Ontario Canada) my uncle has a couple sets of power pack heads he might want to get rid of for a reasonable cost. also if u are close i could help u get ur motor machined and together kinda a under the table job haha shhhh dont tell my boss

thanks hope this helps
mike
