Nitrous motor recommendations

Hi Guys, My 548ci BBC (with a fogger) seems to be getting tired after two years of local heads up racing so it's time to freshened it up. Along the way, we need to find more horsepower as we have fallen behind by about 3 tenths to the fastest cars in the class. We are planning to run some PSCA Wild street races next year as well so we need enough HP to get a 3500lb car into the 8.20's. I'm fairly sure the major power gains will be with cyl heads. We currently are running an off the shelf set of 5 year old Dart Pro1 345's. So I guess the question is if you were building a 555ci BBC to run 300-500hp nos hit, would you use the current Dart heads and have them ported or buy new larger CNC'ed heads? If you vote new heads, which would you use?

call Eric at cfo racing he does alot of heads for fast psca cars, or look at the bmf ,cfm stuff

Hey 1320,

Call Paul klyczec. He is right in your back yard and will stir you in the right direction. He just built me a 570" BBC that made over 1100 on his dyno there in Plattville. That was with conventional heads. Another guy that Paul did a motor for is running 8.20's at Bandimere. It's an off blue 67 camaro. The guy that owns it is named Jay.His motor didn't make as much as mine did.Paul's number is 1-970-535-4884.

MOOSE, funny that you say that because Paul is exactly who I plan on using to build this new motor. I know Jay well and that car is flying to be running 8.20 up here on the mountain.I will for sure go with whatever Paul recommends but I guess I was just wondering what other thought about the option of having current Dart heads ported or whether to by new CNC heads. I'm tired of watching the taillights of the cars in my class with that PKRE sticker in the back window. :lol:

The three that I would look at would be Canfield, Edelbrock, Trick Flow. Those three right there make kick ass BBC heads. Paul has worked extensively with those and can make exceptional power. If you want to go a little better and money isn't tight than look at the Dart 18* heads for BBC. Paul can tell you the story behind those. In my opnion Paul has the best service after the sale than anybody I have ever dealt with.

What do you think about BMF Heads on a 500+ci BBC with nitrous?
Have you heard anything about them?

79 camaro i saw a set flowed and they were hand ported just clean up and it was the 350s flowed 397@800 and 292@800 one of the best flowing right out of the box most of the companies are full of it .dart 355cnc won't flow 385 @800 the RHS head cnc flows389@800 and 290@800 all numbers are with no pipe on exh and on a 4.50 bore stand at 28in all in all the BMF are BadMF... hope to see you at super chevy 79 , johnny c

Hey Jonny

They have a BMF 385 and they say that they are a conventional head... I assume that they are the 24* style??? When they say conventional they have to be 24* right??

I have not even thought about the Super chevy.. Never been to one. Is it all bracket racing or do they have heads up classes?

Hey Adam,

Yes sir those BMF heads are the poop, but they are manufactured and start life as a Canfield 360. Conventional head means stock port layout. The 18* Darts we used has the stock port layout but have been rolled over big time. They generate some serious flow numbers in the middle of the range al the way to 1" lift. Also don't forget the Pro Filers, they can generate some awesome power. In all seriousness the best bang for the buck out there are the Canfields and the Musi Edelbrocks. They have to be worked but what head doesn't. Alan Long still runs his Edelbrock/musi heads on that 565. He's ran an 8.08 with them :D :D

From what I'm hearing the Pro-Filer 385 CNC head is pretty good and on par if not better than some of the similar port sized heads out there. I'm looking for some very serious heads to be rolling out of Pro-Filer in the near future now that Darin Morgan is in da house!

Nope, Pro-Filer used to be know as RFE (Ray Franks Enterprises) a few years ago. Pro Top Line is a different company.

I've got canfield 350's on my 582 that are untouched. What kind of gains could I expect from having them worked if I changed the cam to match the new flow numbers after porting. I have to pull the motor this winter to have the headers coated and was thinking tearing it down for a bearing check & some better nitrous rings maybe low tension now that I have the vacuum pump. Would be a good time to have the heads done too.
