Nitrous on The Brake

#1 Post by EntenmannRacing » Mon Jul 12, 2010 9:50 am

Just ran the car saturday with the New Glide. 9.17 at 154mph..1.502 60'. We changed from a C4. We had the nitrous system set to activate when the trans brake was released. Now with the tighter converter and nummerically lower 1st gear I think I need the nitrous to come on while on the brake. How are ya'll doing the nitous off the line ,after the trans break is released or while on the brake?

I don't know of anyone turning on the nitrous while on the brake. And I don't think it's a good idea.

Did going to the glide hurt your 60'? Is there a difference in the two trans low gears. Depending what gear is in the glide you might have to change the rearend gear to help move the car off the line.

99% of Nitrous Racers turn the nitrous on when the brake is release.

There are a few crazy's (even a couple on this board) that have tried it while on the brake. Typically that makes the car blow the tires off (ain't that right Ms. Daisy? lol)...

You'll probably have better results turning it on when you release the brake.

That said your 60' is lazy for that ET. I'd bet there's an eight second pass waiting for ya when you get it to launch good.

If its not spinning and you're not pulling a bunch of timing or ramping in the nitrous, I'd jet up the nitrous system and let it eat. But I wouldn't spray it on the brake.

yea the 60' never seems to get better than 1.50, with the C4 it would spin pretty good and get a 1.5 now with the power glide it doen't spin an gets a 1.5. I will leave the nitrous linked to the brake as suggested. Since it's not spinning anymore I might try 100% flow off the line. Saturday the NOS controller was set to 55% inital and 2 seconds till 100%.

The tune up or lack their of:
timing I have a 3 stage retard box that I have set to take 17 degrees out for the first stage and 2 more for the second stage. Havn't run the second stage yet. Base timing is locked at 34 degrees. 1st stage is a fogger with 42/42 Nos claims 450 to 500. The heat line on the ground electrode after the first run was almost right on the center of the bend. I think thats were I want to be. Does that sound to conservative???

Sounds fat as hell and lots of timing in it for that big of a shot. This is a SBF ?

You're launching on a 42 pill and it's 1.50 60' and not spinning?

K something ain't adding up here ... Maybe you're blowing through the converter big time...

I've never tried all 100% off the line it's only been as high as 60%, I have the N.O.S. controller. With the C4 it would spin bad, With the glide it did at most 1 to 2 tire revs that I could see from the replay. It is a sbf with highport heads ,408CI. The converter is a 4200 stall ATI fuel&blown series

What kind of car are we talking about here? Mustang? how heavy? What kind of setup?

I'd expect something running that ET to be in the mid 1.30's 60', even quicker if we're talking a light weight Mustang.

Yeah, yuor 60 is way off. When I was going 9.10's, my 60's were in the 1.23 to 1.26 range. I am a lightish car though.

Dang, that things a pig for a Stang lol... Sorry, anytime I hear Mustang I think flyweight. Still at 3400, it ought to be 1.3x something. You're pulling plenty of gear with a 3.50 and 1.8 glide and tight converter, but on the bottle it still out to step on out.

Got any video of it, or data from MSD box or anything? What's your launch RPM? Footbrake/Transbrake? Do you have an RPM switch on the nitrous, if so when does it hit? Any delay on the nitrous?

I have some video converted to computer format but it is with the c4 and a loose converter (5600 stall), The MSD is a 6al Digital no data recorder
Transbrake launch on converter stall 4200rpm. Nitrous is activate with WOT switch and tied to trans brake, system has a window switch for safety set at 3800 on and 8300 off, MSD limit set at 8500 rpm, shift is at 7200rpm. No nitrous delay, it Hits right off line but at 50 to 60%. The older videos with the C4 ,it seems the front end lifts to fast and is at full extension before the 60' mark. it looks like it starts to fall and unload the tires. May be I shoud try adjustable shocks in front to slow the rise a bit. !!??

I'd have to watch it to suggest what to do on the shocks, but if you think it might be running out of travel early, then by all means slow the extension down some and see if it likes it.

Also next time you have it out, drop the Launch Chip down to 3500 or maybe a little lower and see if it likes that. Sometimes they want a little bit of a run on the converter to work right. Get some video next and put it up for us to watch.

The 3.50 gear would have to go. At least a 3.90. I have in my car a 1.80 low gear set, 4.30 rear gear, and a 28" tire.

3.50 gear will take hit off of the tire but make it a pig out of the hole. I would give it a chance to 60" with a better gear and work on the suspension to make it bite and hook....
