distributor timing question

help! i am a drag race beginner. i purchased a 240z w/383 chevy stroker,builder was running nos, i have removed for now. question?? he has tack welded the weights in the distributor (no vac. advance). the normal advance movement now just floats with no control?? is the setup normal for nos? now w/o nos whats is a ballpark timing setup? thanks for any help..

I would suggest checking your initial then your total timing to see how much advance you have. Usually you run more timing w/o NOS .Just for a ballpark try around 36-38 total. If your dist dosent seem like its working properly just get a new one.
