MSD 6al worth it?

#1 Post by Gus68 » Sat Oct 23, 2010 7:28 pm

Hey guys!!!!! After battling a bunch of stupid problems with my car this year. I have come to the conclusion that there is a problem with my MSD 6al box. To verify the problem we put in a "normal" style Pertronix HEI modual and unhooked the MSD. Now the car runs great! Had a very good weekend with it and also ran faster than it ever has!!!! So now I am wondering if I should send the MSD box in and have it repaired or just say to hell with it. Do you guys think I would gain anything having the MSD other than the rev-limiter?

well if they will repair it for free then send it back and then sell it and get a different box like the digital 6 a programmable 7 would be better but pricy and if you don't need all the functions it won't do you any good.

They won't repair them for free anymore. You get a nonrefundable diagnostics charge now, regardless of whether they repair it or not. Right before the first of the year, I sent a 6AL back through the local speed shop. The speed shop had several items to send as well. They did not repair them until after Jan 1, when the diagnostics charge went into effect. It cost $55 for the diagnostics on the 6AL, total for me was $118.00 to repair the box. Speedshop, (who used to be a dealer for them, lol) was hit for a total of $200 for the 4 items they could not repair. The repaired items, such as a 2 step, and a timing retard, could be bought for new at the repair prices...

Thanks for the link to tech west! I may have to go that route! But is there any gains to be had, going with an MSD? Have any of you guys installed an MSD and picked up any time??? I don't want to go through all the hassel of shiping and paying to have mine repaired only to gain nothing.
