Electric Water Pump Switch

#1 Post by Bruce69Camaro » Wed Jan 09, 2013 9:30 am

Where can you just buy a thermostatic switch for a water pump, something that would turn on the pump around 165F and go off around 140F?

Summit sells a kit from Moroso, but I only need the thermostatic switch.

I'd like to hook my water pump up to a switch for a little extra insurance, in case I forget to turn the pump on......
Those who think they know it all have no way of finding out they don't.........

Shouldn't be too hard to find a temp switch like that which you would hook up to a relay to control the pump. It'll probably have to be adjustable as those temps are pretty low for something OEM.

Something like http://www.summitracing.com/parts/der-16749/overview/ maybe..

With the pump off and no circulation, how will you protect against hot spots that are far from the thermal switch? Areas may be much hotter than the set point of the switch.

So are you thinking to just wire it to come on when I start the car would be btter?

I currently have it on a toggle switch to allow the water temp to come up and then I turn the pump on as well as the fan.

To assure me that I don't forget to turn the pump on, I was thinking that I'd add this switch.

My pump is wired through a relay that is triggered by the ignition circuit. So it runs all the time that the engine is running.

I also have a switch that turns on the pump and fan for cooling in the pits.

X2 ....I would not run the motor without the pump, use the switch for the fan, in case you forget to turn it on. That is what I did for that exact reason.
