msd multi stage retard (digital)

#1 Post by rustbucket » Wed Sep 06, 2006 8:18 pm

I purchased a digital msd retard unit and right out of the box it wouldnt retard. After confirming all connection with msd tech support they decided it was defective.I swapped it with a new one and the same thing. I know your thinking, Ive got it connected improperly. I took it back and got one that takes the pills and it works fine. Ironically it used the same wiring and connections. Possibly a bad rash of digital retard units? Just a heads up.

Now you have me wondering if my box is retarding correctly. Seems like I can't kill off much power with the launch curve of my 7530 digital 7. When you're pulling 15 degrees out for well over a second, it should really make a difference! At least I'd think so.

I should take some time and do some testing in the garage with it.

Anyone care to share their launch curve experience? If you don't want to share in public, e-mail me at craig@2quicknovas.com.

Thanks.

A priceless trouble shooting tool is the MSD Tester, it simulates a crank trigger signal and lets you test your retards sitting in the garage. I believe it can also simulate a distributor mag pickup.

If I remember right (CRS), around $130. They do work slick, good investment I believe.

That's not too bad. So you can simulate all functions without having actually run the engine, right?

Well you can simulate the engine running at any RPM by turning the dials. So it's easy to check retard functions, shift points and shift lights, and ignition output (it uses a test plug). Hook your computer to your 753X box and you can watch total retard, etc. Highly recommended.

Sound just like what I need. If I can get it pulling power out like it should and bring it back in slowly, I think I can lay down a good number. I'm not pulling much of anything new and its run 1.32 on the 8.5s. Dropping back to the 3.73s was a big help.
