Vibration!

#1 Post by 555RAT » Sat May 03, 2008 11:22 am

Hi there everyone, my car developed a vibration from about 1,000' on (maybe a little earlier) that I need to track down. I just had the driveline balanced and it's fine they said so what are some other area's that are common to causing high speed vibration? combo: 555bbc, ATI glide with roller tailhousing, dana with 35 spline and spool (narrowed with short axles). Thanks,
Keith

2.5-3* out back, I'll check the front from back of tranny. It's a ladder bar car and I think that's fairly close. Thanks,

With the driveshaft balanced I guess I'll start checking the axles and pinion bearings. I'ts a dana with 35 spline axles that are pretty short and have very few runs on them so I'm not expecting to find much, but who knows maybe there's something wrong in there. Thanks for the suggestions so far.

Alright, I checked the runout on the driveshaft in the car and there is about .013" runout. Took the shaft out turned it 180* to see if it might be the companion flange and the runout was in the exact same spot. Would .013" runout on the driveshaft cause a bad vibration that gets worse the faster you go?
Thanks,
Keith

I wouldnt think that little bit would be noticable does the vibration get worse upon acceleration and taper off when you lift off the gas? While the driveshaft is out wiggle the u-joints in all directions to make sure there is no binding or tight spots.

Thanks everyone, the u-joints don't have any binding to them, I'll run it on jack stands and see if something wierd is going on. I had the slicks balanced and it made absolutely no difference. The vib does taper off after the finish line but not as quickly as engine rpm so I'm convinced it's behind the engine somewhere. Thanks,
Keith
